and love ubuntu at the same time. mostly, i just hate helping people with it. because it is an awful pain just to get drivers installed. :thumbsdown: and people need help A LOT more often on those boxes. and now i feel like the loser that cannot get a driver to install. no matter how much sudo is involved. >8-(

And despise it at the same time! ;P Although, to be fair, I prefer ObjectiveC to C++

I do not have this problem with gentoo on any of the 50+ machines / virtual machines I manage on a daily bases. Most drivers are built into the kernel and so it is generally a good idea to use a recent kernel. Outside of that I would avoid use any sound card other than what is built-in to the motherboard. And also never buy a graphics card that does not have a nVidia GPU. Intel and ATI drivers are far inferior to nVidia on linux. They always have been inferior and I do not see that changing.

I have always wanted to install Ubuntu in a dual boot style along with Windows XP. Never really remembered to do it though. :~

The only problem i've had is getting the wireless to work, but that is a simple fix just download one from http://linuxwireless.org[^] and your good to go. Other than that Ubuntu rocks

I built a PC with an AMD Phenom II X6 to learn Linux on...I installed OpenSuse 11.3...so far, I have to say it's been pretty painless. I thought I'd have all kinds of troubles with drivers but didn't have a single one. Of course, after I went through all that I discovered Subsystem for Unix Applications (SUA) under Windows, giving me Bash, C and Korn shells and I could have learned all my *nix command line stuff from the comforts of my Windows but it was still a good experience :) ...now I SSH into my Linux box from my Windows box and get the best of both worlds.

So ubuntu is following apple's lead -- if you want to upgrade your sound card, throw the whole computer out and buy a new one?

At my old job, my friend was trying to install ubuntu and asked the in house expert linux expert for help. He walked over, saw what she was trying to install and announced loudly in his Russian accent "f___ ubuntu!" It became the rallying cry of our team whenever we had a major software / hardware issue, regardless of it's relation to ubuntu.
