Suppose you were to pick another job entirely outside of IT, programming, engineering altogether. What would you choose? I have been thinking about this lately and I have thought teaching might actually be fun given the right situation. Any other thoughts, what would you pick?

Yuck - I spent my childhood doing that ( my dad was a landscape gardener ) and I think that's where my resolve to work indoors came from. It is as a Work For the Dole Supervisor for Mission Australia. They are the people I had to report too when I was on WFtD (which doesn't officially end until 20/03/2003 for me). I am on probation until this project ends 13/04/2003 and can then not have my contract renewed if I am unsatisfactory or they don't get a new project for me. If they do I will be on another 6 month contract where the same rules apply. Each WFtD project is 6 months so that is why the employment contracts are the same length. I am tenuously linked to IT with my project being Web Pages and Ausio editing for a community radio station. Better than my book boxing warehouse job. Currently on a break from the Category 4 Workplace Trainer and Assessor training which in the next few weeks will be followed up with Senior First Aid and Line Manager OH&S. So if nothing else I will end up with some industry recognised certificates that are relevant to office and building site work. Back to training, fill in more stuff later. Doesn't sound too bad - as you say, better than stacking books, at least. How are the bush fires affecting you ? I remember last time they came within a street of Damiens house. If I didn't have to worry about money... A Writer of fiction, both Speculative Fiction and Fantasy. When I retire I am definitely going to give it a go. I'm a bit too busy now to write much more than short stories, and then not very often. If money was an issue... I have no idea what I'd do. I've had a number of different sorts of jobs during periods of retrenchment. Nothing I've done, other than programming, has much attraction for me. I hope to start a bit of an email thread with you tonight as I try to plan how I can use this job and a lot of work on my part to skill myself up (knowledge and certificates) so I can get back into IT and also be covered if I need to work on building sites again. Aside from choking on the smoke and everything being covered in grey dust they actually haven't affected me. If I had to travel by car or train to work in the city it would be a big problem but I'm about 1km from home so no effect yet.
