Looks like the reactor in Japan might go pop http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-12720219[^]. The building containing the reactor has been destroyed, but the steel box that contains the reactor core is OK, and they are claiming the radiation levels are falling. This is the last thing they need, the whole situation is totally dreadful.

A Dead ringer for Kate Winslett[^]There are another four damaged ones as well. Still, at least the current one is officially one "seriousness grade" below 3 Mile Island. Japan definitely doesn't need that at the moment.

A Dead ringer for Kate Winslett[^]There is exactly 0 chance of the reactor itself exploding, and comparisons to Chernobyl are irresponsible and show a staggering ignorance of the technologies involved. What is happening in Japan is comparable to what happened at Three Mile Island. What has probably happened is that the pressure in the steam generator/turbine loop exceeded safety margins, and the weakest component ruptured in a steam explosion, with the shrapnel damaging the building structure. Radioactive gases and steam may be escaping, and the reactor fuel is probably melting, which will render it permanently inoperable ( TMI had to be buried in situ because of exactly the same thing). The press is really engaging in some seriously chicken-little style reporting, with a noticeable lack of responsibility or accuracy.

I wonder why someone thought that was worth a univote, I know practically nothing about atomic power plants but I have no trouble believing that the press is hyping it up and basically reporting bullshit.

To be fair, that article actually said the reactor was shut down before the meltdown occurred, and this will reduce the radiation leak. This one http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-12723092[^] is far less so. I think nost of it is deliberate & irresponsible hyping, but a lot is to do with lumping Science in with the Environment in the news room. I suspect the author is an evironmentalist and knows little about physics or engineering, I think he might also be grinding his eco-axe, so to speak. I've noticed the BBC getting worse over the last 5 years or so, it rarely sensationalised items, I suspect so it can compete with the other media. Personally, I'm pro nuclear power, it's almost a no-bainer in lots of places. One odd thing about them is they release less radiation over their lifetimes than a coal-fired station, if properly designed (and the new ones are). Given the strength of the earthquake, the design has performed pretty well as far as I can see. Puzzled by your one vote too, the press is consistently irresonsible and sensationalist.

The current incident is rated as a 4, Seven Mile Island was a 5 and Chernobl a 7. It would probably be higher but I susepct the scale didn't go much higher.

The scale doesn't go any higher than 7: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Nuclear_Event_Scale[^] Thankfully, Chernobyl is the only example of such an incident.
