So our dev test machine where I work has been super slow lately. One of my coworkers found out the reason... the "systems" team reduced the CPU, memory, and disk space on the VM (our dev "machine" is apparently a virtual machine). They are fixing it now, and I know who to blame when stuff goes wrong from now on. :-D

I'm not at all surprised. Someone told me that most of the work that you do is virtual.

I always get a chuckle when our IT teams calls ME the developer to ask what <insert server name> is for and is anyone still using it.

That's usually how things have gone at every place I've worked. Them: is [such and such] being used by anybody? Me: *shrug* uh, maybe, maybe not. Them: we'll just disable it and wait for somebody to complain. Me:

Makes perfect sense. Something has to be sacrificed in order to make a telling contribution. :)

Two years ago my dev team was consumed by the larger dev team of our parent company, and we moved offices and floors within the same building. We had in our own little office 3 servers as well as our desktops. One of the servers which was running Share Point and some web app test environments has not been seen since the day we moved. They claim it was moved into the server rooms somewhere, but it is not on (the network) and they cannot locate the physical box.

In that case, I suspect Sacha Barber sacrificed his first three first borns.

Now that would be telling.

sounds like a great excuse for a new app 'Gremlin-Monitor' sits as a service on a VM uses the VM API to check the amount of resources sends an alert (via email) if the resources are decreased unexpectedly sends an alert if the organic growth/usage of that machine means the base resources should be increased... It might have been done before already ...
