One version or the other of IE is anyway going to be on your machine. You WILL have it on your machine (unless you choose a different operating system than Windows). See below.

But so many others make their money by building plugins for IE, and website developers will want their websites to work perfectly on whatever reasonably popular browser, regardless of their opinion about the latest [insert browser name here]. So, those companies that develop for IE will have to buy Windows for the fact that IE doesn't exist on any other platform. That is money, made by selling licenses of Windows. It's just not how it renders websites. There's common controls, script engine, etc., that come along with the browser (which are not obviously "visible") unless you're programming using those.

Unnecessarily. Other browsers like FF, Chrome, Opera and the rest can be installed and removed without affecting the operation of the OS. I have a strong suspicion that MS only moved some key portions of Windows into IE so that they could argue that they couldn't unbundle it.

I'm not denying the fact that they may have intentionally strongly coupled a few things here and there with IE such that it becomes an important part of the OS. However, I'd like to give them the benefit of doubt as well. Windows explorer uses the same engine. I do not think there should have been any malicious intent here (as opposed to say, having the common controls updated with each version of IE), because if I were to write two different 'explorers', I'd strongly consider the possibility of both using the same engine. But the users are free to install and use whatever browser (including Google malware) they want, and I don't see the point in installing something that apparently is anyway going to "suck", and then whine about it. Browsers are free, anyway. I personally use Opera though, and I'm very happy with it.

So, i thought i had at least upgrade my IE, get it out of the way. So downloads installer and kicks it off: and it closed everything running to install, reopened them again and then told me to restart computer to use it. :wtf: (Why not just close everything, install and then restart computer as part of the install process). Anyway, took a few sites for a quick spin, Engadget, CP, MSN, and after 60 seconds of this, i thought why did i bother. It's toolbar arrangement, tabs, address bar, all look so dated. The page scrolling is not very pretty, it just feels so X| Think I will be staying with chrome.........

So downloads installer and kicks it off: and it closed everything running to install, reopened them again and then told me to restart computer to use it. :wtf: (Why not just close everything, install and then restart computer as part of the install process). Ive removed it from my PC as well.. it couldnt render about 6 of my normal sites i went to properly, even in compatiability mode. Facebook & Twitter kept on crashing it as well. Took it off and put IE8 back on and all is well.. Piece of junk... JC

You mean it doesn't match what you like. I personally find Chrome's interface rather hideous and cartoonish. (I use Firefox and home and IE 8 at work out of choice. A big reason I use IE8 at work is that I keep my yahoo mail open and Firefox has a tendency to start consuming lots of CPU and memory for no damn reason, especially with yahoo and some other sites--even CodeProject has gone into runaway mode on Firefox.)

You won't discover much new features that way. Seems that IE now supports the shortcuts on the taskbar-menu that are Weven-specific. I'm hoping that the performance-advisor (for identifying the slower addins) comes to Chrome/FF quickly :)

Eddy, i appreciate that, but if i don't know whats there i can't miss it....... Its the first looks that get me, it doesn't say 'you want to use me', and therefore having got so used to chrome, i have no desire to change.

There is no sane reason why you shouldn't upgrade from 8 to 9, even if you don't use IE at all. It is used internally by the OS and the IE9 engine is much faster and more secure.
and therefore if its core to the OS the updates will be pumped into the box by MS regardless. The only thing i use IE for is Outlook access for my work. (oh, and testing a site to check its not just a chrome issue). FF has been and gone with each major revision, and never lasts ont he machine more than a day.

Personally I like it. I didn't have the issues with the install that you did. I clicked install, the installer went away. I even continued to use IE8 and do my work on my machine normally. It came back and said I needed to reboot to finish, I told it "later" and went about my business until I was ready to normally reboot. At which point it came back up with IE9 installed and ready to go. It's clean It's fast (fastest browser on the market currently[^]) It integrates nicely with Win7 and doesn't cause problems on lesser windows OS (like Vista/XP). Supposedly it's secure. It's fairly standard compliant (at least as much as is necessary for web browsing IMO) It supports HTML5 better than any other browser... What isn't to like?

There's NO version of IE9 for Windows XP. The minimum supported client OS is Vista, and server OS is 2008.

Wanted to try it. Downloaded the 64 bit Win 7 installer. Fired it up and it almost instantly bombed. Guess I'll wait until the 3rd release or so...

The speed of IE9 is amazing, but I do admit the interface is ugly. Even uglier than Chrome. Plus, I've gotten too attached to a lot of the features in Opera to switch to anything else.
I'm glad to see there's other Opera users on here - There doesn't seem to be many of us :( I've been using it since around when version 6 or 7 came out. :)

There must be something IE does not know how to close running on your machine and that forced the reboot. On my machine IE9 RC installed just like any other browser. IE9 indeed closed everything including the shell (Windows Explorer), but was able to restart the shell without reboot. Since MS software aims not to work but to work most of the time, the installer is OK. I like the layout, it basically trades speed of menu access for window space. I just do not care. IE is the browser that works nicely with other MS products. For example, if a Java Script function is called from a Silverlight plugin, only the IE debugger works. I see only one major UI problem: IE does not open a new folder when I click the back button holding Ctrl. IE also does not have as much plugins as Firefox. I doubt MS can encourage things like AdBlocker, so it is unlikely to catch up ever. Thus, I stay with FF, but I find IE usable and will not wonder if other people prefer it.

U Chrome and FF fans, don't really like change, do u(or feel threatened by it)? Instead of admiting that ie9 is a great browser, very intuitive and easy to use, it has great features that non of the other browsers have. Pls. don't make stupid remarks(no auto-restart on setup completion). It prooves u are pathetic. The reviews don't lie. IE9 is here to stay and it's great.

Excuse me for making a personal opinion. Let me just say that i personally feel that the default look and feel of the IE9 toolbars, address bars and buttons is less aesthetically pleasing than IE8 (which was fine by the way). I found that when scrolling a number of sites on my 2560x1600 monitor the pages seemed more juttery than they did in Chrome at the same resolution. As for the install process, what was the point of restarting some of the processes that it had stopped to do the install only then to tell me if I want to use IE9 I must then restart the computer, and shut all the processes down again, thats just bad planning. Oh, and by the way, those who use text speak while trying to make an opinion are the pathetic ones, how professionally and intelligent does that make your opinion. U is you, and Pls is please, get a grip. And finally, IE9 probably is a great browser compared to the previous versions, but again its is my opinion, which I am entitled to have, if you disagree fine, but no need to resort to insults. Have a nice day :)
