My new Sprint PCS PCMCIA card!!!
-
Wee--I'm posting this message from my laptop using my new wireless Internet PCMCIA Card!!! OK, this is cool. I was at the local Sprint PCS store and I picked up the Novatel Wireless PC Card. I can now connect with to the Internet with my laptop anywhere I get digital reception (which is just about everywhere in the US). No phones lines, no customer networks to deal with, totally awesome. I wonder what new gov't regulations there are going to be regarding using your laptop while driving! Subscription rates are based on megabytes, not connection time. A little pricy ($40 for 20MB is the minimum). The card itself is $299, but they're currently selling it at $100 off!!! You can even send and receive phone calls (the card is assigned a phone #), but that costs extra. :-D I guess Santa came early :-D Marc Help! sensitivity and ethnic diversity means celebrating difference, not hiding from it. - Christian GrausI'm currently on SpringPCS Vision with my Sanyo 4900. Rough times in the beginning but after they switched their plans to unlimited Vision I called the rep and asked if I can hook up my laptop to my phone via the 3G network they said sure and it was unlimited. So I bought a $20 cable and downloaded free connection software and now I hook my phone to the Sprint 3G network for $10/month unlimited transfer :) I've been averaging about 70-110Kbps on my laptop via my phone. I know their TOS says unlimited only means the phone transferring data and not using another device, but I'll keep doing it until they tell me to stop. But so far speaking with two technicians and 3 CS reps they all told me "UNLIMITED" and using it with my laptop is not a problem. You can see how SprintPCS Vision reacted to this because if you look on their site all the PCS Connection kits (cable and software) have been pulled from their site and their stores. I guess their realizing people started to connect their laptops for only $10/month :| The bad thing is we know that SprintPCS can change their TOS at anytime, and when they do :(( Code4Food ---- "There is no try; only do or do not" -Yoda

Well, being new to this method of communication, I don't know. However, once connected, there's a little window that shows your connection status - bytes send and received. (I wish the thing could be cumulative, but then they wouldn't make extra money (2c/Kb) when you went over your monthly allotment. Anyways, you could run just the irc and see what the data rates are. This would at least give you a benchmark. Marc Help! I'm an AI running around in someone's f*cked up universe simulator.

Verizon Wireless allows unlimited transfer/time for $99 a month. Too pricey for what I need. Plus, I can't stand Verizon. Their customer support is awful. I've had excellent customer support from Sprint. When I moved to Rhode Island, I had the option of getting DSL from Verizon or cable from Cox. I called Verizon, and they said it would take 2 weeks for a guy to come out and verify that the lines were capable of DSL, and by some miracle they were, it would be another two weeks after that to actually get hooked up. I called Cox, and the guy was at my place two days later. 30 minutes later, I had high speed internet access. I once did a study on DSL vs. cable. It was quite eye opening how both marketing camps claimed to be able to do something the other couldn't. Wierd. Technologically though, DSL is growth limited, and is seriously distance limited. To add bandwidth on cable, they just need to allocate another 6Mhz "channel". Much better technology. Marc Help! I'm an AI running around in someone's f*cked up universe simulator.

..."UNLIMITED"... Cool! Let's hope it lasts. I should do a bits-per-second test, and see if it varies with signal strength. That would be interesting. Marc Help! I'm an AI running around in someone's f*cked up universe simulator.
