I bought a 26" screen with a 1900x1200 resolution a while ago for about AUD 465. I'm quite happy with it. Just out of morbid curiosity every now and then I check out the price on such screen. I'm kind of puzzled, the 1900x1200 seems to have all but disappear since a few month ago (3 or 4)?! Even DELL's Alienware have dropped to 1920x1080... What's going on!?! Anyway, ultra glad I bought my screen when I did it now!

I guess the reason is the cost of producing different sizes vs the market - 1080 for the video market means big sales, so low cost. And heck, it's just 120 pixels less vertically - and you gain another 20 horizontally. Personally I use two monitors anyway - I find the physical separation easier to deal with than logical separation (much like with wives) :)

Just 120 pixels, huh? Over the weekend I have been doing some repairs and tinkering on my first computer. Its graphics resolution is 64 x 64 or 64 x 32. Pixels, not characters :)

It does :) Actually, my first programs ever were adaptations of Space Invaders, Asteroids and Lunar Lander, all pure machine code and using those great graphics modes. But it was not really that bad. At 64 x 32 the program had to control a graphics memory of only 256 bytes. Even with the slow processor and the less than optimal programming skills I could get something moving on the screen. Edit: here is a screenshot I just found in the web. I remember running this test program as well when I got finished with soldering together the computer :) http://www.sparetimegizmos.com/Hardware/images/Elf-Trek_small.jpg[^]

TV display panels are being used but I recently bought a 28" 1900z1200 monitor (insert smirk) for £250. Rarer but worth it.

I noticed that 1080p monitors have been a lot more common than the 1920x1200 monitors for quite a while (Around an 8:1 ratio last time I was looking). Which is stupid because more vertical resolution is better for a computer. The only reason I would get a 1080p monitor is if I was only going to use it for media, in which case I'd buy a small TV instead.

Don't they still make monitors that swivel? 1200x1900 would be very handy for development work.

No no, the official resolution is 1920 x 1200 (I always by the Samsung 24" ones).

You agree with that sentiment. I agree with that sentiment. Joe Sixpack only uses his computer to watch highlights of sports games he missed, and his wife only uses it to watch cat videos, 16:9 suits them perfectly. Joe PHB at the computer company knows that wider screens are inherently cheaper (less area for a given diagonal size) and that he can get additional volume saving by tapping into the same production as smaller TVs. Joe Shareholder knows the same and will boot Joe PHB out for failing to maximize his profits. We're hopelessly outnumbered, and I'm dreading the day when blueray++ comes out at 1.85:1 or worse yet 2.33:1 and completely ruins monitors for anything productive. :((

Good luck finding any new laptops at that resolution though. :sigh:
