I read an earlier post about GOTO statements. How many people remember using GOSUB? Are you old enough to remember having to do an IPL? Did you ever POKE and PEEK? And how long has it been since you saw "Insert next disk into Drive A:" Some of the parvenu will never has come across these, whilst the greybeards will look back fondly...(or possibly with contempt).

I think there was  involved whilst I was setting the clue. Never aplogise, never explain. The setter is always right! :)

BASIC was for noobs. A real computer has a hex keyboard.

:) Or RUN, LOAD and SAVE, (Spectrum ZX). :) Remember hooking your cassete recorder up to the spectrum, inserting the tape, jugling finger presses, tweaking the tone and volume to get a better load...

They were fairly generic terms in the 80's! But the volume settings on the ZX80 and 81 were impressively restrictive. The Speccy was much more forgiving.

As I already said: No BASIC. A real computer has a hex keypad and tapes are loaded like this: (Reset) (Load Mode) C0 F0 00 <-- jump into ROM with the cassette loader (Reset) (Run Mode) 04 00 00 0F FF <-- tell loader to load from 0000 to 0FFF (wait until loading is done) (Reset) (Run Mode)

i was using GOSUB (well, it's Clarion equivalent) less than two years ago. and i spent most of last year translating COBOL's version into C++. good times. IPLs sucked. POKE and PEEK were fun. it's nice to be that close to the metal.

Switches. Sure. The hex keypad was only one step away from that. The earlier design of my old little computer still had switches instead of the keypad.

How about compiling Novell NetWare 2.x on a stack of about 25 floppies? Now THAT I reflect upon with contempt.

I remember using 8" Floppies (much room for innuendo there, feel free), and also the joy when 1.2 meg 5.25" floppies were available.

Anyone else heard: "Feed the Master" "RTI on one" "CPF halt"

I must get a clever new signature for 2011.
