Recommendations for setting up a developers laptop

OK got myself a nice and shiny new laptop 8gb ram, 1tb hdd, some cpus (I think) and other stuff that you need. What I'm after are recommendations on how to set up the VMs, software to use, etc. for doing developy stuff (using VS2010 mainly). In other words what works for you at the moment? I won't be bothering with XP or Vista as OSes that I'll be testing on, but otherwise anything goes (pretty much).

For a start, I would install VS2010 using some sort of installer. How you set up the VMs is entirely up to you. What are they for?

I always set up the C: partition to be just large enough to hold the OS and maybe Office. I set up the D: partition with its own Program Files directory and install all other apps there. Reason: I use drive backup software to take an image of the C: drive. If the OS gets wonky, I just restore the backup. (Yes, you'll have to reinstall some software, but it's a lot easier than re-installing the OS.)

A 1tb drive and 8gb of ram in a laptop? Battery life is going to be - well - shit. I use VirtualBox for VMs, and I have a XP/32, XP/64, Weven/32, and Server 2008 VMs since the laptop itself is running Weven/64. Vista is a non issue because it's just a crappier version of Weven, and anything earlier than XP is irrelevant. It's a pain in the ass to keep all the VM's up to date because I rarely use them.

I only ever use a laptop, because I do a lot of work on client sites. I keep all s/w and VMs on C: and data on D: (both 500GB 7200 hybrids). I currently have VS 2005, 2008 and 2010 on the main machine, installed in that order. Small projects are maintained on the main machine, but larger projects have their own dedicated VM on VMWare Workstation. Also, when writing a DB project, I set up the DB in a VMWare machine, regardless of whether the project is being developed on the main machine or in a VM. I also run MS XP Mode for various bits of software that don't run in Win 7, but which are not used enough to warrant un upgrade. ...and finally, I have a full XP MS Virtual PC to support a .NET 1.1 project, that I wish would go away :~ - or the client pay lots of cash to upgrade. :) With 16GB of RAM, it all plays together rather nicely.:cool:

With that kind of "state the obvious" you must be a programmer. The VMs are for testing. My question in part was whether to do the developing (ie. install VS2010) in a VM also.

I recently purchased an Asus G73jh. i7 8 thread processor 8 gig ram with 650 gig HD, 17 inch screen and backlit keyboard. Doing my development in vmware modules. couple of reasons for this first reason is personal preference really. if I have a major booboo, i can just fire up the last snapshot of my module instead of reinstalling everything. secondly is I'm working on learning Sharepoint development. For this VS must be installed on the same os as Sharepoint. So vmware with server , sharepoint 2010 and VS ultimate . This also allows me to recreate our real office environment with sharepoint on one server, SQL on another and web server on a third with AD on a fourth.. this laptop can handle all 4 modules at once with little trouble. It also handles mobile development at the same time im doing all that( working on Android apps on my own.)I kinda like it.....not cheap but worth every dime to me.
