Does anyone know of any IT recruitment companies in or near Tampa/St. Petersburg, Florida? My dad lives near Tampa, Florida and I need to move to the area and find a job. Because I'm not familar with the area, I don't know what companies would be in the area. I'm in the area now and will be here for about a week. I'm going through the phone book but wanted to know if anyone had any experience or know of any good companies in the area. Thanks, Carolyn

If you can’t have fun at work, then why go to work?

If you apply to all the local jobs listed on Dice.com that remotely match your resume, then you'll get hounded by recruiters wanting to submit you for positions. Same goes with more generic job searching sites like monster and careerbuilder. Most of the positions on the job sites are actually submitted by recruiters who get commissions for placing you. Using recruiters is a quick way to get a lot of interviews, but they are often sleazy salespeople who will try to negotiate your rate down and the client's rate up in order to get a large cut for themselves. Make sure you know what your skills are worth, and don't be afraid to negotiate, yourself.

Thanks. I would prefer to apply to companies directly but we are on somewhat of a time crunch. My daughter wants to go to USF (University of South Florida) and if I can find a job and get moved by the end of June, I think she will be considered in-state tution. That will save her $10,000 a year on the cost of her education. I'm thinking of applying there as I noticed several jobs on the website. I work for IUPUI (Indiana University Purdue University at Indianapolis) in the medical field so I think that may work. I just don't have an inside contact. But I will heed your advice about the recruitment companines. Carolyn

The recruitment companies aren't all bad; I've used them in the past and would use them in the future if I had to, but you have to treat them like a bunch of used car dealers. Some developers refuse to use them due to bad experiences, but they will often connect you with companies that you would not have normally found. Good luck in your job search; I wish you the best.

If you have some time, do some searches for technology parks in the area. Chamber of Commerce might be able to help you out. Then, drive through them, writing down company names. just a thought
