Desktop app future?
-
My job is to develop desktop app, but in recent years, I found even myself shifting to web app for stuff like document and the spreadsheet, I rarely use the installed office right now. Another thing is that I found many retail shops are using system that are web-based, this is not the case several years ago So, is desktop app future really doomed?

Probably, along with BSD as well. Also Apple should just quit while they're ahead.

Although web, smart phones and tablets are taking over, there will always be a need for desktops. Some companies can't use web based applications for security purposes, others simply don't want to rely on it. How do you run your business if you lose a connection? What if you live in a country that limits internet usage and can cut it off at any time?

No. There will always be a need for desktop apps. I think a lot has shifted over to the web over the years and will continue but you can't get rid of desktop apps altogether. You have been with CP for over 4 years. Where have you been hiding?

Robots, machines, powerful games, drivers, ...there are thousands of apps out there that can't work in a web-based way...

Those things never happen - they're all just inventions of luddite haters who don't want to be BFFs with the rest of the world...

Even at work? I find web apps pretty good when you have to take a quick look at a document, but for any serious editing productivity is much better with desktop applications.

Diminished but not doomed. And there's no reason you can't learn web based technologies.

I think it will always have it's place but in a more online world it'll be less prominent a role. James Binary Warrior.

I personnaly belive that there will be more and more hybrid apps. Look at all the smart phones/tablet apps. Most of them are copied/installed locally but they use a web service too. In fact they depend on it. But the app itself is a local app consuming some sort of web service. So not just web, not just desk but hybrid. Sure there will be web only and desk only(ingnoring some downloads/updates) apps. But most of them hybrids.
All the best, Dan

At the very least, you'll need that browser to be able to use all these webapps. Btw, I wouldn't count on a web-only world - online things will never have a 100% guaranteed uptime, and users know it. And especially now with stupid 3-strikes laws popping up everywhere, you'll never know when they'll decide to disconnect you from the internet, and then what. In a webapps-only world your computer would now be an expensive room heater.

I noticed a few weeks back someone posted their first message and they were a member for something like 5-7 years? I guess they maybe created multiple accounts to vote themselves up to MVP status with the other accounts?

Our world was going to be ActiveX everything in the mid to late nineties. Then everyone realized o'sh**, what a big security vulnerability these things are (And they've been trying to close all those security holes and back doors they exposed since then). With every new push for Web based technologies, comes the desire for more desktop like behavior, and the security oopsy cycle repeats itself. This has all happened before, it will all happen...(yeah you know the rest)
