French Burkah ban to come into force in a few days
-
France will become the second country in Europe, after Belgium, to apply the ban, starting April 11. [^] Its quite severe. No wearing of a any face covering thing in public places. Whether this applies to crash helmets, skiing goggles, scarves, and whether paint ball must now be played without any face protection remains to be seen! :)
"If climate has not "tipped" in over 4 billion years it's not going to tip now due to mankind." Richard S. Lindzen, Atmospheric Physicist, IPCC "It does not matter who you are, or how smart you are, or what title you have, or how many of you here are, and certainly not how many papers your side has published, if your prediction is wrong then your hypothesis is wrong. Period." Professor Richard Feynman

During the Olympics there will be areas where you can't have your face covered for security reasons. I'm waiting for the first test case from someone who wants to wear a burqa there.

No, no, no, no, no, no. They specifically haven't banned Burqahs, that would restrict religious freedom, they have banned people covering their faces in public. Naturally pretty much the only people who do this are wearing Niqab[^] (c.f. Burqa[^] which will also be illegal in public, as it includes Niqab). Got to observe the subtle legal niceities :-)!

There was talk of a "burkaverbot" in the Netherlands as well, but it seems it was just talk - would you happen to know more about that?
Yeah, I heard tell of such. Have to say I read Burkahverbot (burkahforbid) as Burkahbot! Since they look like Darth Vaders its an appropriate name! :) I think you accidentally coined a phrase there!:)

Yeah, that makes senes, Verboden being the verb. Still, BurkahBot is still quite amusing! :)

I wonder how this is going to affect the mime industry... Will they say anything?

While that is certainly a form of the verb, the verb itself is verbieden - not that anyone here really cares of course :)
Yeah, true. Thats the past participle I wrote.

This hardly seems the right place to discuss a political issue.
Hold on a second here... Don't you think you might be putting the horse ahead of the cart?
Its more a joke than political, hence the paintball etc coment. :) How about surgeons? They wont be alowed to wear face masks in theatre!

Is an operating theatre a public place? And I'm fairly certain most places don't let you play paintball on public land - I'll try on the village common this evening.
Every man can tell how many goats or sheep he possesses, but not how many friends.
Yes, it is oddly. Dont forget a public place has a peculiar meaning in law. For example a pub is a public place depite being privately owned.
