Not sure if it will work either, but I may try... I don't think it will though... I know the dell rep said any mobile number would do... Mind you? :)

Yep! Not a snowball's chance in HFIL of me giving my number out to somebody I've never met in person.

5! Sensible man! I don't give mine to people I do know if I can help it. The last time a boss of mine got the number (he did need it that time, I admit) I changed it the following weekend.

Sorry for asking :( I guess I'm too used with the receptiveness of my own culture...

I don't think it's a "cultural receptiveness" thing: I think it's a "I get enough crap already, I don't need more marketing droids getting my information" thing. It sure is with me, and the local culture is very open and helpful. Heck, it takes twenty to thirty minutes to buy a bit of meat for supper - and that may involve making tea for the butcher...

Hi, I'm trying to order an alienware from dell, because i'm flying to U.S. on april 25th. The problem is that they need to confirm the order by call an U.S. number, since I can't be there at order time, I'd like to ask if someone could confirm the order on my behalf. I also can't order when I'm in US because then I won't get the laptop in time. If you can, please message me so you can give me a mobile phone or something dell can call. Thank you very much.

Unless you have some relative or someone who trusts you is in US, the chances of someone doing that are slim.

I understand, but I think you may be missing how brazilian culture is and I really encourage you to put Brazil on your next vacation plans ;P You might be surprised how you get received here, it is really different then everywhere else. I've lived in US for an year, so I know the culture a bit. I know many people that lives or has been in many places around the world, and believe me, here it is different, you gotta see for yourself. But I do understand your point, in a country where the junk mail was born I can perfectly understand the defensiveness. It was a long shot, I'm really getting tired of just trying to order a laptop for 5 days now and I think I went for too long of a shot. Curse Dell for having such a requirement, it could've been so easy if they just took the money my credit card bank was giving them and didn't need to call me on a us number.

It would save a lot of effort too. The DELL reps asked me if had one there. If only had my host family number yet... I lost it I could call them and ask, but that's not the case... I completely lost the stuff when I moved here in Brazil

They are probably trying to protect themselves - and you - from shipping a system on a stolen credit card!

Alright, let's cut to the point: What's in it for us? Warm feelings don't count, I get enough of those from cleaning my weapons.

Oh, tough luck dude! Can you do something like order when you come here and take a quick shipment option? Otherwise your last resort would be to go to a store and pick one up.

If that was the case, why amazon and many others don't do that? And stolen credit cards take only a call to cancel the card and the bank will not approve the billing, problem solved. And even if the card does not get cancelled, it's the credit card company the responsibility for the billing, there's no need to worry, if the credit gets approved the problem is out of their hands and it becomes the customer and the bank's problem. This is the first time ever I buy something with a credit card and it's necessary to call me back to confirm.

He was asked when I gave it to him: "Do you pay the bill on this? If not, then don't keep the number." A month later he was furious when he tried to call me and it didn't work! It wasn't an important call, it could have waited until the next day, or he could have run on the land line. But, because he had "my mobile number" he used it.

If you are staying at a hotel while in the states, perhaps the hotel may accomadate your request. It's a long shot, but might be worth a try. :)

My boss here wants me to use my personal phone for e-mail and text responses and alerts, I pretty much had the same response, though he has my number already.
