I am looking for a good reliable laptop in the range of 600 dollars. My current laptop is almost 5 years old, its an Acer and it has held up well over the years of 24x7 on time and abuse. This is what I have in mind.[^] Any suggestions or advice?

        I hate to be picky - but $600 isn't a range.

Do not buy a laptop. There are too many laptops without owners. Adopt one.

                Oh, [$600, $600] is a range, ($600, $600) is not.

If you can stretch to $700 then the Toshiba Portege R705 is amazing value, very light, well speced and includes a DVD RW. The R705 has the older i3 though, not the new Sandy Bridge i3's. I've used an acer and found quality to be hit and miss.

How about the Acer Aspire AS5552G-7641. For $20 more, it's quad core and in stock.

Performance is likely to be a wash between Intels higher IPC and higher clock rates. Battery life will probably be less because intel has been spanking AMD for years on that measure.
