Dragon Age: Origins?

A friend of mine has been talking this up, and my local game store has copies of DAO-Ultimate Edition (the game, the Awakening campaign and all of the official expansion modules) on sale. Before I let myself get sucked into yet another time sink, I was curious to hear reviews from other likely geeks. Obligatory programming question: does anyone know if there are any mod tools? I played Neverwinter Nights, also made by BioWare, and it had an official suite of tools for making your own modules. If such exists for DAO, I would appreciate any links or suggestions.

i loved DAO. DA2 wasn't quite as great, but still fun.

Excellent game. Good: * Visuals and voice acting are superb * Characters are really well written * Combat and AI are quite good * Storyline is compelling * It'll keep you busy for quite a while Bad: * Locations are copied and reused for some minor encounters * You have to be online to use the DLC content (expansions). If you go offline while playing, it starts complaining and could give you problems. I've played through the whole base game (Not Awakening), plus two of content packs (Morrigan's and Leilana's)... Got distracted by other things before I could try out Awakening.
Proud to have finally moved to the A-Ark. Which one are you in?

DA2 takes this to an absurd level. and not just minor areas, either. there are basically two 'cave' maps, and your team goes through each of them multiple times, in different directions, with different doors crudely cemented over on each variation. there is one 'warehouse' map that you go through multiple times. there is one 'shack' map, one 'estate' map, etc.. they all get reused. it totally kills the illusion.

Hated it. It was extremely boring with a lot of "running" back and forth with poorly designed controls and so-so graphics. I gave up after a few hours. My seventeen-year-old son got about a third through before he got too bored and he normally loves games like this with heavy story lines. I uninstalled it last weekend (freeing up 13GB of space!) I disliked Neverwinter Nights for many of the same reasons, both my sons hated it and stopped playing after an hour or so. My kids and I didn't like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic either, though my boys got further than I did. (Knowing all that, the only reason I tried Dragon Age is that a nephew gave it to my youngest son. The same son claims Mass Effect is cool, but it's by BioWare and so I'll give it a pass.)

It was OK. Horribly slow loading time (couple of minutes for about 20 seconds of interactions ) Crappy "traveling" (because of crappy loading time).
Watched code never compiles.

I've been kinda avoiding DA2... Heard a lot of bad things about it, so I figure I'll get it when it hits Steam's bargain bin in a couple years. Pity, because the first one was really good.

Author of the Guardians Saga (Sci-Fi/Fantasy novels)the content reuse was the worst aspect, IMO. that, and the story - DAO's story was far more interesting. DA2's all about politics, factions, picking sides in impossible situations, etc.. after the first ten minutes of DA2, i'd made up my mind to skip all the dialogue, pick the neutral options in the conversation trees and just go on a killing/collecting spree. that part's still fun, though!

Yes, the game is worth it. I play the PS3 version, myself. It's a great time sink with decent replay value. There is a mod kit for the PC version. Register the game on Bioware's site to download it. It's a version of the same tools they used to build the game. :) Flynn
