Is it a bad sign when your boss quits
-
The boss called a team meeting this morning, the first I have every been called to, and tells everyone he has given his two weeks notice. He also doesn't want to disclose where he is going because of possible repercussions at the current position. Monday morning drama. Is this the first of a round of departures? Glad I'm only a consultant :)

No its not necessarily a bad sign. He may just have got a better opportunity elsewhere. If you notice two or three of the top level are leaving, you might need to be wary. That is how I look at it.
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realise it doesn't say anything it's too late to stop reading it.

I guess it is only bad if your boss is a great boss and knows a lot of the job that has to be done... Sometimes (Peter's law) one boss can be specially wrong and seeing him departing can be great news for the company... You know your boss and you have more information than ourselves about that. Apart from that, and from the other point of view, I would say that if he has already another job he has decided to leave so you should not worry about a possible round of departures... Good luck!

It depends on the size of the company. If the company has more than a couple hundred employees or so, it probably has a 'middle' layer of management. In that case, you should worry when that middle layer starts disappearing. The guys at the top get the 'golden parachutes', the mid-level guys get the advance warnings, and the schmucks on the bottom get the shaft.

It is if he's the owner of the company!

You know, one owner of a small-ish company where I worked for many years did eventually quit. He worked as manager in many of our projects, and was framed as the main responsible for a particularly painful (i.e. expensive) charlie-foxtrot. The other owners required him to either step off his manager role or quit the company, and he opted for the later. The company didn't end there - it exists even today, years after I moved on - but things did get somewhat strange for a while.

there's probably a lot more going on than him just quitting. Given that, AND he's quitting...nope, not a good sign. (Last time I ran into this, both technical leads for the project I was one quit. It folded about a year later).

can be both good and bad 1. If your boss is a good boss, he will tell you the reason, weather its for better opportunity (good+bad) or there is something fishy going around in the company which makes it insecure to continuing the job (bad+bad). 2. If your boss is not going to tell or you cant trust him, you should look for reasons, company position and discuss it with other senior members whom you can trust to get clear picture, analyze and take necessary steps according to situation. if there is no bad sign the company then its Good+Good other wise Good+Bad
