No. He did a task that he was paid to do; a task does not equal his job. There are other tasks. Tell you what, how about you do a job where you only get paid for the time you spend doing those tasks - do you think you'd like that? Every minute you spend surfing the web, every minute you spend at the toilet, those days you leave early because you finished your tasks - those days you get less money. Doesn't sound attractive, does it?

Will you please stop telling everyone that? He didn't finish his job. He doesn't want to tell his manager that something has been done, because he'll then have to do more work (that he's being paid to do). He basically wants to sit on his arse and do nothing, while he DOES KNOW that there's more work to be done.

how about some sincere words of wisdom like telling the manager that I have completed the job and get the new task and tell him that I would start working on it from tomorrow. P.S. That's what I did

You are wrong. The boss always invents something more to do. He is not paid for that! He is paid to do what he already has done! Try to understand: you are paid to do something in 8 hours and you finish it in 7; the remaining hour is yours, not boss'

No he wasn't. He's just done a task - his job does not consist of a single task. The employer has every right to expect that he works for the entire time that he is there. Suppose he finished the task after half an hour, does this mean that he should be entitled to seven hours of scratching his navel?

No he didn't . His job is to be productive for his employer. As soon as he completes the current assignment, he should ask his supervision for the next. If they don't have one immediately available, he should ask what's the most productive thing he could be doing in the meantime: documenting his past work, learning other products/projects, etc. By the way, in case you're thinking I'm goofing off while I'm posting here on CP (and therefore not being productive for my employer), think again. I've got Visual Studio compiling a project at the moment, and I'm waiting on a product build. Also, I'm waiting for a customer to get out of bed (they're 3 hours behind us, and it's 7:23 a.m. here) before I can debug a problem they're having.

You're like a dog gnawing on a bone aren't you? Perhaps you need to look up the definition of job here, and see that he finished a task and doesn't want another one.

I had a meeting yesterday about contract work, still got to think about it and check numbers, not something to rush into.

I've been in talks since December. It's a good role set against a company plan for taking a product to market within the year. There is already a /working/ prototype so I get to rip out it's intestines with a blunt knife and fill it all with straw before propping it all up with some clever use of CListCtrl.
