I've loved every British sitcom I've watched, except Fawlty Towers, which is only so-so, and The Vicar of Dibley, which is booooring. YM/YPM, 'Allo 'Allo, and Mind Your Language are all awesome. Yes, I'm aware most Brits would be horrified at the last today.

I agree! Farty Towels is undoubtedly one of the best comedy series EVER. Now here's a novel idea: Why doesn't the BBC do a remake of it? What do you think? Could it be just as successful now in a new design with new actors? Do you think there are any actors that could do as good a job as the originals?

I have a soft spot for Mind Your Language. It was of the time, in the same was as Love Thy Neighbour and Are You Being Served were.

It's amazing how many people feel that way about the show. It was only twelve episodes, way back in 1975, but it's still dearly loved by huge numbers of people. It more than adequately displays the difference between comic genius and artless cr@p. I wonder how many other sitcoms are remembered with such gusto. -- Roseanne? Ten years, with nary a memorable moment. -- Friends? What was it, seven years? Too much badly planned pseudo-sentimental crap, with a few laughs (which I can remember only a few of). -- Any one of a thousand other trite, formulaic sitcoms, which served only to make too much money for too many talentless people? Cheers was about the best of the American goes-on-for-bluddy-ever sitcoms, because the scripts were so polished, but it still went on for too long. But it appears that Fawlty Towers, Only Fools & Horses, and the Goon Show will never die. Don't mention the war, uncle Albert! And shut up, Eccles!
The Big Bang Theory is making a good show of itself, though.

I never liked Only Fools and Horses but the other two are classics. Thank FSM for BBC7/Radio4 Extra which have rolling repeats of the Goons and other radio classics.

Since we're resurrecting old TV shows, I just had a hankering this evening to watch a few episodes of my Faulty Towers[^] DVD collection tonight. Although I've seen every episode a dozen times, it's been a couple of years since I dusted the DVDs off. Well, I have to claim that this is the best British comedy, and arguably universally the best comedy series of all time, as brief as it was. The two episodes I watched were "The Germans" and "The Waldorf Salad". These two episodes actually make me laugh out loud, which most comedies raise a chuckle, at best. Even after having seen them so many times, they still make me laugh out loud. The ingenuity of John Cleese and Connie Booth are amazing, even after 35 years. What amazes me most is the supurb dialog and delivery timing. I also have a book of the complete scripts of the series. After reading the scrips. It's amazing how many nuances I'd missed viewing the videos. So, just my recommendation to the group if you haven't re-watched the series lately.

I watched it a little while ago to see what all the fuss was about. I really didn't find it that funny. The Inbetweeners is the best comedy of all time.

Its good, but Red Dwarf IMO pips it, purely because its got good scifi, and great slapstick! :)

I like Monty Python, for the most part. Fawlty Towers is simply overrated.

No, No, No, don't even suggest that! The BBC tried it with the remake of 'The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin' a couple of years back and while the remake was mildly amusing it wasn't a patch on the original.
The problem with the Reggie Perrin remake was that they called it Reggie Perrin. It had some decent stuff but it could only ever be compared to the original. And it could only ever fail that comparison. Fawlty Towers would be even worse. Plus of course John Cleese would never let them do it.

Exactly, if they want to open the content to a new audiance then in stead of producing a remake why not repeat them. God knows its been a while for either. Others I'd like to see again are Yes Minster / Prime Minster. The Young Ones. But then I suppose that's what UK Gold is for...
