Not Great Here

For the last number of days I've been helping friends and family evacuate, move valuables to higher ground and to fill sandbags and build dikes around homes. I had mentioned in a previous thread that we might hit our 100 year flood level, which was 1180 feet above sea level. We're now at 1182.9 feet above sea level and there's still as much as another foot to come. Today the skies opened up and it's been pouring for the last two hours. Over 1000 homes and businesses have been evacuated. Our major routes over the river (that connect our two halves of our city) are now limited to essential services only and there is a 45 minute drive around the city to get to the next bridge. They're using car dealerships for emergency services. We have heard parts of the electric grid will be going down. Our water treatment plant is being threatened. We've lost a major golf course, 20+ soccer pitches and over 1/3 of our city park space. So, if you think warm fuzzies, send warm (dry) wishes, pray, light candles or sacrifice baby kittens...whatever you believe in, anything you can do is appreciated. Peace, -MisterJames

Ah, I live at over 1100 feet too so I was getting worried I wasn't safe from rising sea levels. :)
The worst realistic case is only a few hundred feet: complete melting of the antarctic ice sheet. To get significantly higher would require raising the temperature of the deep ocean dozens of degrees; something that would require geological time scales to happen.

Just watched it on video, is there still snow on the ground there? It look like the depths of winter still! Poor sod, its been a beautiful spring here for months and everything is green. :) Must be horrible to have winters that long.

Not at all. We love the winter! We're outside skating until it gets below -25 Celsius. We've got four seasons like everyone else, just different names: Almost Winter, Winter, Still Winter and Bad Tobogganing. Yes, still some snow in places...especially 40 minutes north of here and at the community centres where we've cleared the ice all winter (15-20 foot piles of snow take a while to melt).

When you're standing with a family, helping them build a dike around the homestead their great-grandparents built 80+ years ago, that's all you really got. The stuff inside the house doesn't matter much anymore, especially when you realize you're likely going to lose it. At least the kids are safe.
