I just updated my Office installation to Office 2010. After the update, my pointer began to jump randomly around the screen. I uninstalled my Logitech Marble Mouse and tried another mouse in another port, same problem. After searching for an answer on the Net, I started poking around the control panel. Right away, I noticed a new pointing device on COM1 called "Microsoft Serial Ballpoint" What in the world? I use COM1 to interface with a lot of different HW, but I've never heard of one of these. Then I realized what was plugged in to my serial port - a Trimble GPS. Every second it was sending a binary packet to the serial port. Office had confused this with a pointing device and installed a driver which interpreted the GPS packets as pointing commands. Oh well, at least I found it pretty quickly.

You should file for a patent man. A gps that can pin point your mouse location on screen. :) That's what I call patent

        All the best, Dan

Why the piggin' hell is Office scanning for input devices? Surely that is Windows job, not Office!

It probably asks Windows, so it can check for input devices used by the disabled. Just a guess. There's way too much automation nowadays. Marc
