Mandatory Comment when voting
-
Looking at the latest articles I see a program that has 7 votes all with a 1 rating and NO comments at all. I propose that in order to votre you must leave a comment. Feedback is the only way we will become better programers. And please rate the code, if you don't have a need for the app don't rate it a 1 due to the fact that you don't need it, or it was already done and maybe done better. I would also like to see a better voting system, one that will allow you to rate different aspects of the code differently. What are your thoughts? Darroll

The real question is what are people actually rating? I usually rate the article itself on grammar, spelling, organization, and clarity. Then I rate the code on usability, originality, and execution (does it work, is it well commented, how extensible or reusable is it). I never or rarely rate on "coolness" because fads come and go. Personally, I'm against unedited reader contributions. I think every article should be reviewed by an editor prior to posting and those that need work should be sent back to the contributor with suggestions for improvement.

If it isn't worth your time commenting, then it shouldn't be worth your time to vote either.

What about making it that you have to be a gold member in order to post an unedited contribution. Darroll

Articles often get voted 1 if they are merely one big [pre] block, but I agree a small comment would be nice. Mandatory commenting would IMHO be a bad idea, but how about after voting where the "you have already voted", etc, message is shown it prints "It would be nice if you gave feedback to the author regarding you vote"? Maybe even a link directly to the base of the page so they can review other messages too?

I think we need a way to vote on different aspects of the code. Like the Anger, humur, sincerity bars you posted. I do think they should be related to programming though. Say: Readability: Clarity: Extensibility: etc...: Darroll

This has been discussed, and as far as I remember it won't be implemented because it was thought people will simply write a quick bogus comment to complete the form. BW "If you enjoy what you do, you'll never work another day in your life." - Confucius

My reason for not commenting articles that I rate with a 1 rating is that the article is pure crap. It's like telling fellow CPians "Stay away" (or "Author, please delete this article"). And what's the use of saying that in a comment??? Comments should be constructive imho.

Not Gold but a previous author, i.e. you must have at least one edited article. That might work?

What about the article the other day (I forget which one it was) that used = = = = = bla-bla = = =... to fill up the 100 word count minimum?? X| I mean, if it's not worth the authors time to even use any other characters than = and bla, why even comment. However I will vote 1 because i wasted my time clicking on the article to begin with  Anyway, not to rant on bad articles (because I think there's been enough of that to get the point lately), but sometimes any comment I would be inclined to leave would not always be... umm.. say... constructive :~ - Nitron

Sounds a good idea, I don't mind having articles edited but it does mean that updates take a while. I quite like the ability to post a reasonably decent version that's then tweaked over whatever period, just to get the article 'out there'. Actually, I'm just about to start cleaning up that ATL version of Chris M's Touch util (Shell Extension) that includes a dialog for setting the times etc. I agree that requiring people to be Gold status is probably a little too high :) I only just got upgraded (god knows why :)) -- Paul "If you can keep your head when all around you have lost theirs, then you probably haven't understood the seriousness of the situation." - David Brent, from "The Office" MS Messenger: paul@oobaloo.co.uk Sonork: 100.22446

Absolutely. If an article has shown promise (i.e. it features something good but just written badly, or with too little explanation etc.) then I tend to write a comment suggesting that it be re-worded etc. Sometimes its just blatant rubbish and I can't be bothered, they already have warnings during the submission process so additional comments aren't going to help matters. I totally agree that all comments should be constructive, that's the whole reason this place exists (IMO) :) -- Paul "If you can keep your head when all around you have lost theirs, then you probably haven't understood the seriousness of the situation." - David Brent, from "The Office" MS Messenger: paul@oobaloo.co.uk Sonork: 100.22446

I disagree. I tend to always try and comment, but while there are still good articles being posted, a LOT of crap is being posted as well. So long as one or two people post some guidelines as to why an article is sub standard, why does every person who votes have to say the same thing ? You are an honorable person if you only give 1's for that reason. Many times I have gotten a one on my article where other have given it 4's and 5's. The net effect is that my score plumets and I will not be in the top three, or over the long term my article has a mediocre scroe because of one or two people that did not fairly or objectively rate my article. I think the reason to require a mandatory comment when you rate with a one is to solve this problem. But for many of the reasons that people have already stated, I do not think this is the way to prevent the unfair voting.
