I like the (far too few) quotes: "I can't tell you what I feel right now. Obviously, I haven't understood it correctly because we're still here." That's an easy one. What you haven't understood is that it's all bull. the newspaper quoted James Bynum, a church deacon, as saying "It's easy to mock them. But you can go kick puppies, too. But why?" So certified, qualified churchmen have also rightly identified them as sick puppies. And, of course, there's this: "Harold Camping has not been sighted since his failed prediction" Sure he hasn't. He's too busy moving into his new home in South America, along with his travelling companions -- several large suitcases full of cash. There may not be a God, there may not be a Heaven, and there may not even be a Hell worse than the one we already live in, but one thing is certain: There will never be a shortage of complete bleeding idiots.

I don't have the link with me at work, but there was a mother Missouri who murdered her children and tried to off herself to save them from the Tribulation. (Christians looking forward to the End Times are typically pre-Millenialists, meanging that they believe the time line is the Rapture, followed by a period of great trouble called the Tribulation which ends with the return of Jesus, who then destroys the world and remakes it into a paradise for the faithful. After a thousand years, this paradise earth is destroyed and the universe ceases to exist.)

You're kidding, right? These holier-than-thou cretins looked down and sneered at everyone who they decided would not be "saved", whilst wallowing in the mud of their superiority. They deserve every bit of mockery they get. I doubt very much they'll learn anything from the whole experience, though. They'll still see themselves as "the chosen", no matter how badly they live their lives and mistreat others.

They deserve everything they got for being so stupid as to believe anything said at all in regards to religion. If they are so dim as to think that religion is for real then let's hope the ensuing poverty makes them realise how it is that the stupid and gullible are captured by these cults (All Religions are Cults).

There is a quote in the BBC article that is quite telling: "I had some scepticism but I was trying to push the scepticism away because I believe in God," Here we have a True Believer ® saying that belief in God requires you to put aside all capacity for rational thought.

Consider this:* If this wack-job (or one of the many others like him) wanted to, he could successfully convince his followers to rise up and kill the non-believers.

                    • There a a lot of them - I mean, after all, they were all over the place looking glum and giving out pamphlets.*Yet another cause to worry. Quote, below, from clever Albert, at least begins to explain this. * With the world ending, and all, the smartest most-convinced amongst them would have charged their printing bill.

Yup it is great for Accountants, I just wish you would keep it away from structured data applications. When some pillock of an excel jockey says "I don't see your problem I can do it simply in excel, and it only takes me a few minutes" I just leave the room, it is somewhat like religion, you have your tools, I just refuse to use them!

Although I love being confrontational toward "Organized Religion" and "bible thumping freaks of nature", I do know some great Christians and Muslims who are really awesome people. I think what makes them great people is that they don't force their beliefs on people and they are not fanatical in their thinking. I think the key word in all of this is "fanatic". Whether it be Islam, Christianity, or the tooth fairy, if you are a fanatic then you are wrong.

"Blind spot" is a good description. I cannot understand how otherwise rational, clear-thinking people, often with an interest in science, can still believe in theistic religions. It's a mystery to me.

I think that is easy to explain. Most of us have been trained from an early age that it's better not to provoke god's wrath and were provided with a long list of things which are considered sins. This includes critical thinking. So, if you want to be religious for whatever reason, it's better to ban criticism from your mind as good as you can. Otherwise you will be in a dilemma.

How about being angry at the media for making this a front page news event for the last couple of weeks. Idiots. Marc

I can only find a bunch of pages linking the same youtube video of the story, the lack of other sources is making me mildly skeptical.
