A week or so ago, some guy asked a question about writing his own OS in the C++ forum. I responded that as he said he was a C++ newbie, that he should choose a more realistic project. He replied via email: Dir sir I am student of IT engineering. We have studied c, c++,java,vb, At this stage i am little bit concept of all the things which i studied. As far as i am concern i know the basic things of c++.I am confuse about the tree concept. So that i have to implement in my projects.I am reading a lot of books of c++. But i am not getting the advance part. so please help me to understand the logics. How can i directly implements cpu registers to my programs. I know to call mouse in dos mode by the help of registers. but to make my own os i have to know the logics of registers well. Help me to understands registers and its implements. Note the absence of words like please. I replied: I have no idea how to do what you want to do. I do know that if you want to write an OS, this is the least of your worries. He replied: Thank for your mail. I to know to call mouse on dos mode. But i have no idea of file structure and to encrypt and decrypt.Help me. you sure help me Rajee You sure help me ? I responded: Bloody hell. Like I said, writing your own OS is going to be your own private hell. Encryption and decryption are big topics, on what basis do you think I've got time to embark on lengthy tutorials ? I love to help, but this is ridiculous. Try google. He wrote back with this: Why you such type of fucking words.I know you aren't capable to do it. Just go to bed and sleep for ever bye Well, I say go to hell, rajee5283@hotmail.com. You are the person who has finally pushed me over the edge. You and the guy who sent me yet another source file and asked me to turn it into C# for him. I'm going to finally add a comment to my sig block letting people know that code sent to me without asking first will go in the trash, and will not be replied to. All requests like this one will recieve a blanket reply telling people to ask on CP. I think I've tried hard enough to co-exist with people who think they can abuse me because I refuse to be their private tutor. This exemplifies obvious things : - sometimes it doesn't help to answer something else than what the poster expects, regardless of whether what you say is valid or not. Often, next replies are mere insults. I know it's sad, and it prevents you from teaching more than the simple technical details on a given topic. You have copy/pasters in front of you, not people interested in how things work. - why don't you just ignore it? Why do you feel entitled to respond to anything, especially when it's not kindly asked ? Click Delete, that's simple.

Well, I have never had anything this bad. But I can feel your pain. This is probably why I hold back answering very many posts. If the question indicates they are clueless, what endless loop are you getting yourself into. This and taking the time to find real educational answers along with links to sources for them to go study (which is what I really want when I ask something.) go by with out a thank you, but a post with some code they can copy (clueless as to what it is doing) is a great help they are thankful for. It's not so much that they are frowned upon per se, it's just that for some people, anonymity is an excuse to behave indecently. I don't think less of you if you use a hotmail address, because you are not an ass. I would try not to judge, however I think you're probably too kind. And people often try to exploit kind people. I would probably have been less polite till the second letter, making him well understand that I'm not his/her servant here to accomplish his/her wills (probably it's "his" anytime, only boys can be so rude and impolite, but I don't want to be misogynist :))

Again, you can screw up a C/C++ program just as easily as a VB program. OK, maybe not as easily, but it's certainly doable. - Jamie Nordmeyer - 15-Nov-2002
