Happy Memorial Day Weekend (US only)!

To those who gave their lives in defense of Liberty and Human Rights, Thank You! To those who lost their lives supporting the whims of politicians, my apologies and my thanks. It's not often easy to tell the difference until many years have passed, but you were there when your government called, and you have my gratitude for doing so, even if their motives were less than humane. To those in the military, still serving, only time will tell whether the months you've served will result in a better world, but I thank you for trying. To the rest of you, who have no ties to our military forces, keep in the back of your minds the thought that there are people out there who are putting their lives at risk to achieve goals which our government feels are in the best interests of our country, and think a little prayer for their wellbeing, as you toss another brat on the barbie and quaff another beer for the cause, is in order. Have a great weekend, everyone, and let's hope that everyone will come home safe and sound... :-D

You may not believe in the conflict they are fighting but they are our sons, daughters, brothers and sisters and they are putting their lives on the line. When I was in we had a saying...if I can remember it; I've Done So Much, With So Little, For So Long, That Now I Can Do Anything With Nothing. oorah

I grew up with Vietnam hanging over my head, and felt lucky that I just missed it. They shut it down a couple of years before I graduated. In 75, I was out of high school and watching them fly the last Americans off the rooftops of the Saigon embassy. Like a lot of people in my generation, our distaste for Nam became a distrust of our leadership in general (this was also the time of Watergate and presidents who were "not a crook") and an outright disdain for the military (though I was never disrespectful to a soldier, many of whom were my less fortunate friends). I spent my time humming "all you need is love" and other such idealistic tunes. It wasn't until I got older and began to understand how complex the world is that my attitudes changed. I enjoy a wonderful standard of living in a land of relative peace and prosperity, and much of this is due to the fact that I have one of the greatest armies in human history watching over me and assuring me that no one is going to drive a tank across my front lawn on their watch. I realize now that without them, the cold war would have ended differently and we'd be speaking Russian. Or perhaps German from the Nazi threat. Or maybe even English from when the British... no, wait. Nevermind. :) Seriously, there will be no perfect nation as long as they're run by people. All of us are a little screwed up in one way or another, so how could our nations be any different? America is a large, disfunctional family. Our politicians often do stupid, stupid things with the lives of those who choose to serve. Sometimes with good intentions, others out of greed and a desire for power. And yet, these men and women still put on the uniform, continue to serve, and continue to keep the tanks off my front lawn. From those of us who never served, I offer the most heartfelt thanks and gratitude. I've tried to find other ways to make a difference, but none will match what you do, and what you sacrifice.

At least we can take solice in the fact that, no matter how small our army becomes, we will still probably never have to speak French.

Thank you for your kind words Roger. I am a combat veteran as some here already know and I personally (an my comrades as well) believe that Memorial Day is nothing but another Holiday for most of the jackasses here at home. Telling people to think of us on this day is like telling everyone to think of Santa Clause at Christmas time. Our country has its flaws but it is still a great country. Just like you Roger; I'm sure you are a good man but you still have your flaws. :-D :-D
