Just ordered a Nikon D3100 camera

Wouldn't you know it now that I'm back from my trip I order a good camera. After seeing and missing a lot of really nice shots I got frustrated. I had a Nikon N6006 I had bought years ago after returning from the Bahamas (I think I see a recurring theme here) but using film and inexperienced as I am I used the camera in Auto mode and for close shots with good lighting it did fine but again missed a lot of potential shots. So started looking for deals and came up with this[^], looks like a fairly good deal and the dealer has good ratings, and camera got excellent reviews. Anyone else have this beast?, and if so how do you like it?

www.jaxcoder.com[^] WinHeistNice camera very good indeed(And if you shoot most of your picture outdoor I would recommend Cannon and if you shoot indoor go for Nikon ) but I am using cannon 500D and I love it. However if you want to capture quick pictures I would suggest to go for Point and shoot digital camera if you are not planning to shoot in manual or creative mode. Best of luck.:thumbsup:

Nice camera very good indeed(And if you shoot most of your picture outdoor I would recommend Cannon and if you shoot indoor go for Nikon ) but I am using cannon 500D and I love it. However if you want to capture quick pictures I would suggest to go for Point and shoot digital camera if you are not planning to shoot in manual or creative mode. Best of luck.:thumbsup:

www.jaxcoder.com[^] WinHeistI bought it just 3 weeks ago and tested it days later in a trip to Death Valley. It's an awesome machine, you won't regret your buy. I'm no photography expert (this is my first DSLR) and still do most of my photos in auto mode, but even in that case the difference in the quality of the photos is impressive when compared with my compact camera. I was going to buy a Canon D550, but the CMOS sensor of the D3100 and the price difference made me choose the Nikon.

It's the best camera you can get in that price range. Not a bad choice at all. Spending a little more could have got you a Canon EOS 550D though.

The reason I went with Nikon is that I have a Sigma lens from my old Nikon that I believe I can use with the new machine. It's a better lens than comes with the new one. That and I like Nikon's.

Yes I found that out during my research but that's OK because I want to learn. Wouldn't have been easy with film camera that's why always used auto.

The 3100 uses a cropped sensor (Nikon's patented DX sensor), so manually focusing is a little tricky because of the smaller view finder. That said if you want to specifically learn doing that, then it makes sense.

Thanks Nish for the valuable insight. Since I can control certain parts while leaving others auto I was thinking that I could tackle one thing at a time and when needed I would have the skills to get those tough shots.

You have made a great choice. I had posted in CodeProject about which model of Nikon to buy D3100 or D5100. Take a look at the discussion[^].

Yeah I'm anxious to get it and start shooting. I might take another trip before end of summer not sure yet.
