Facebook started as a social networking site for college students. It was a collaborative tool. That focus allowed it to solidify and grow its core audience. They then expanded and evolved naturally. These are just my opinions. At that point the college students were used to using their real names and not handles. They brought in their families and friends not in college and that exploded. I believe the use of your real name alone has helped Facebook quite a bit. Instead of just being another semi-anonymous online community it became an extension of your life.

They kept it simple and made it fast. Social networking is all about getting that quick hit.

Because it is the only social network in which you can "friend" dead actresses. I've lately been inundated with friend suggestions like Helen Hayes, Brett Somers, Gale Sondergaard, Nancy Culp, etc. Odd, that.
