But some days, like today I dream about one of those night shift security guard jobs so I can read again a literature book or catch up on some movies or TV shows I grossly neglected lately (10+ years). If there's any of you that has a recipe that allows doing those and keep my current occupation please share. :sigh:

If you are anything like me, you spend about 7 out of 8 hours a day on Code Project. Instead, spend that reading.

1. Don't waste time at work. And yes. I AM aware of the irony of posting this at 8 in the morning from my work PC, first thing. But this is my wake-up, coffee-and-sandwich period. 2. Minimise commute, or combine commute with exercise by cycling. Or if you can get a train, so that. I read at least a book a week purrely by reading on my commute, which is a 40-minute train ride. 3. Get a routine going on (see 2) 4. Get up early. Leave work early. see 3. 5. Don't get married. (too late for some) 6. Don't have kids. (see 5) 7. Don't accept jobs that require you to stay late as a matter of course. That is and always has been social abuse. 8. Get Organised.

The trouble is that on a night-watchman's salary you'd soon run out of books, and wouldn't be able to afford more.

Why security guard? Why not data center operator or some such thing ? After you are done with the nightly routine maintenance tasks you are pretty much free.

Talk the bean-counters into down-grading your computers. At the same time, insist on the latest software technology. Then you will have plenty of time to read classic literature: between key-presses in some cases.

The exception is that the bean counters buy "state of the art" computers, or at least they where that two years before the companies I've wirked for bought them. So they've made away with the "down-grading" part... :doh:

Why security guard? Why not data center operator or some such thing ? After you are done with the nightly routine maintenance tasks you are pretty much free.

I'll admit there have been days where I want to give up all technology, get a job as a janitor/handyman for some little hole in the wall mom and pop owned convenience store located on the Mediterranean coast, where I can rent the one-room flat just above the store. And the only electronics around me is small FM radio.
