I suck at soldering!

its so exciting with that music too!

How can anyone suck at soldering? So long as you have a steady hand and a fine enough iron you should be ok. Practise, dear boy, practise!

I find the best way not to use Americanisations is to Practice, dear boy, practice!
Er...Try again. It is one of those where accusations of being an Americanism are completely misleading, or indeed, wrong. Practise is the Verb and Practice is the Noun. Except in the US where Practice is used for both. See Here[^] and here[^]. This[^] should remove any vestiges of doubt and uncertainty remaining within that head thing of yours.

I've got to attempt resoldering a mini-usb surface mount connector back on a board. Not looking forward to it. Additionally my brother tried to do it and didn't have the right tools and left a glob so have to work that out also.

No that was last week, I do salvage diving when I'm not out saving beached whales.

Soldering is like art, either you can do it, or you can't. Most folks can be trained to draw what they wish to represent, most of us never get beyond drawing stick people. I used to train people on the assembly line to solder. I could tell within 15 minutes if they were able to solder or not. (I spent six years in a PCB manufacturing plant) Yeah, watching someone who knows what they are doing, does make it look easy. Those people drive me mad. The upshot is that about roughly 80% of those who try can do it. Good luck with your soldering adventure! :)
It was broke, so I fixed it.

I feel your pain. All my efforts at soldering would leave me with burnt fingers and himalayas on the pcb I was trying to solder a component to.

Shouldn't feel bad at all. Especially considering the task ... 15 pin d-sub connector. I've attempted that and failed. And I'm good at component and trace board. Best bet is to get as far down the cord on either side of the connector heads as possible (middle) cut the cord there and then spice another equally long piece of "good end" to the half you've got no problems with. Believe me! Reasons y-fail -> all that new stuff you're soldering won't fit in the new shell and more over, all those wires are sheilded and that protection from static can't be duplicated soldering by hand then attempting to refoil, no matter what your skill level.

What's so hard about it? Apply the heat only briefly, just enough to melt away a little of the solder, pull away the solder, let it spread on the pad and withdraw the soldering iron. It's all over in less than a second and then you go on to the next contact. Just don't keep frying the board eternally and keep adding solder, nothing really to it.
