I just failed at soldering a cable to a 15 pin d-sub connector, and now I got this[^] on youtube. How easy it may seems to solder those IC[^] Makes me feel so stupid!

I feel your pain. All my efforts at soldering would leave me with burnt fingers and himalayas on the pcb I was trying to solder a component to.

Shouldn't feel bad at all. Especially considering the task ... 15 pin d-sub connector. I've attempted that and failed. And I'm good at component and trace board. Best bet is to get as far down the cord on either side of the connector heads as possible (middle) cut the cord there and then spice another equally long piece of "good end" to the half you've got no problems with. Believe me! Reasons y-fail -> all that new stuff you're soldering won't fit in the new shell and more over, all those wires are sheilded and that protection from static can't be duplicated soldering by hand then attempting to refoil, no matter what your skill level.

What's so hard about it? Apply the heat only briefly, just enough to melt away a little of the solder, pull away the solder, let it spread on the pad and withdraw the soldering iron. It's all over in less than a second and then you go on to the next contact. Just don't keep frying the board eternally and keep adding solder, nothing really to it.

Unfortunately, I'm just not "handy" which is funny as my old man was a brick layer and as handy as they come but I seem to have missed that part of the gene pool.

Try this book. As DD said, its down to the correct iron, but in additon good heat, and for electical work a specialized flux cored solder - regular flux will corode your joints and cause them to come apart. Keep all surfaces including the iron tip clean.
