Are you aware of this thread[^] in the Back Room?
The best things in life are not things.
I've been told about it, but once I resigned as moderator of the Back Room, I haven't looked in on the cesspool, and see no need to do so now. I will assure you of one thing: Shah (aka Otto Von Drunkencoder) asked to be admitted to SB1. When he was revealed to be a rather pathetic troll he was warned that he would either straighten out or be thrown out. Unlike the Back Room - where the large majority of his posts take place - SB1 does not put up with trolls. Shah got so pissed off at his treatment that he 1-voted an article I wrote. (When he realized that he could not do silent attacks as he can in here or the lounge, he changed it to a 3.) In short, he is a piss-ant and not worth my time or trouble. I must admit that I am mildly surprised that people who do not like the politics or the attitudes of SB1 feel some great need to ask for admission for the express purpose of making trouble, and then become indignant because they are told to leave. But then, I was surprised that a post honoring America's war dead was attacked so viciously, too. I guess I am naive. ;)

I put you on a par with my spiritual guru Johnson Chong. And that is very high pedestal indeed. Why don't you see that. I am very hurt by your attitude comrade Oakman :((

You may get hit by some of the other trolls but at least I balanced shah's backstab.

What, 'Happy Memorial Day'? I must get some 'Merry Remembrance Sunday' cards printed, cheer up the bereaved. I was somewhat surprised that "The Relief of the Light Brigade" and "A Modern Tommy Atkins" merited a 1 vote and the sententious pronouncement Those who "abjure" violence can only do so because others are committing violence on their behalf. Which is true, but a bit of the old 'no secateurs', given that the poems remind us of the poor treatment of soldiers by civilians and government alike. (Here is the link to 'A Modern Tommy Atkins'[^] in full on that well known pacifist site "The British Airborne Forces Club".)

Which part of "American" didn't you understand? Was there a United Kingdom Memorial day on Monday, or did you just decide to denigrate our war dead for lols? For that matter, because your U.K. soldiers are not always treated well by the politicians and by you civilians, why is that cause to question their courage or service to your country? What exactly is it that makes you need to reject the concept that they are brave and that you owe them thanks, not opprobrium, for putting their lives on the line?

What part of 'Happy' do you not not understand? Can one really be 'happy' contemplating those whose lives were sacrificed defending their nation?
Oakman wrote:

Wasn't 'Happy' denegration enough? Nothing I posted on Memorial Day denegrated anybody's war dead. I merely responded to Trollslayer's "The Queen's Uniform" post, not to yours. BTW: No 'Which part of "American" didn't you understand?' response to Trollslayer, I note. Just 'Oh, Kipling is my favouritest poet, too!' The day after Memorial Day (USA), I read your sententious pronouncement. Pointless, unless I actually abjured violence, which I don't. (I come from a family of policemen and servicemen - so I am well aware of the truth of Orwell's statement.) I also agreed with Fat Boy that what you had posted was simplistic cack. Soldiers should be neither idolised not reviled. Kipling and Campbell were contrasting the two extremes of civilian attitude toward the soldiery.
Oakman wrote:

Now, given that my grandfathers were in WWI and my father was in WWII (none of them conscripted, mind, all volunteers from day one), and that brothers, brothers-in-law, uncles, cousins, are ex-servicemen, why ever would I do that?
Oakman wrote:

Again, where have I said they are not brave, where have I not shown respect, where have I shown opprobrium? I thank them for being prepared to defend their Nation, and I wish they were not sacrificed in causes other than that. So, given my family background, why wasn't I in the police or the services? What makes you think I didn't try? Turned down - too Cowardly and too Foolish.

You posted a shitty poem about how soldiers are the greatest most honourable people in the world and everybody else is a worthless parasite. You're also an insufferable egotist.

Your time is far too precious, huh? Musn't squander it by being away from the drones that pat you on the back all day and eat up your laughable tale about Mensa begging you to join.

Great story - have you thought about adapting it for stage? I know the perfect part for you: God! Because you're an ex-soldier and all...

My standards are not so exacting as that of comrades ict558 and Ravel H Joyce. I tend to view your maudlin fits of patriotic fervour with an indulgent eye. What I require from you comrade Oakman is a "live and let live" attitude, or failing that, at least an adherence to the AUP i.e. not resorting to coarse abuse, treating other members with respect et cetera. Life is too short for so much bitterness and hatred comrade Oakman.

What can be expected of contradiction and debate but acrimony and vehemence, the insolence of triumph, the vexation of defeat, and, in time, a weariness of contest, and an extinction of benevolence? Samuel Johnson (edited) You should not have chased the big dog in his own yard.

I agree with comrade ict558's viewpoint. SB1 is his private forum, it was bound to happen if you were disagreeing with his viewpoints or making fun of him. Comrade Oakman is like the kid who get's pissed off when he is bowled out, says "it's my bat and ball" and walks off with it. Why don't one of you guys start a private group called SB3 or something like that. We will all join up.
