Default member names (?)
-
Why do we see a number of users with names like "Member 7845347"? Is that some kind of default for users who don't supply a proper name when they sign up? If so then I suggest the default is changed to something like "Idiot troll xxxx". It would be more self-documenting and useful to the other members here.

It indicates either laziness, laxity, apathy or stupidity. None of these attributes are particularly complimentary.

But at least they don't betray a sad lack of grasp of English grammar. ;P For those who don't get it: "none" is singular and should therefore take a singular verb, as in "None ... is ... complimentary"

I have often pondered this and I agree with you on the default naming convention for people who don't give a proper screen name.

'Attributes' is plural. Had I said "None of the attributes mentioned is particularly complimentary." I would be correct, as I would be treating all attributes as a single group ("The Attributes"). However, by not treating them as such I am grammatically correct by the implication of their being discrete entities.

Many times, the default name is better than what most people would choose if pressed.

So which is the correct in this case? 0 - One of these attributes are... 1 - One of these attributes is... This is an honest question, by the way...

So why is it "None of these attributes are..." correct? Isn't "none" another form for "not one"? That would make the sentence "Not one of these attributes is..." correct, wouldn't it?

None can be applicable as a plural. If there is one option - "It is not the one I want". For two items - "Neither is the one I want" or "Neither are the ones I want". For many items - "None is the one I want" or "None are the ones I want". I was, originally, indicating the plurality of the attributes, for there were many attributes, where I was not implying one of a group, but many or all of the group, therefore ARE was correct in this case.

Not true. The subject for the verb is "none", not "attributes". As another poster said "none" is equivalent to "not one" so a singular verb is required.

No, "are" is correct. Just read it without the "attributes". 'None of these are particularly complimentary.' as opposed to 'None of these is particularly complimentary.' Which one sounds right?
Whichever you think "sounds" right the fact is that "is" is correct.

For many items - "None is the one I want" or "None are the ones I want".Yikes, talk about misrepresentation! The (mildly illogical but rule-by-usage) plurality only applies if there is plurality in the requirement, i.e: -- I want two particular items. -- There are five items here. -- None of the five items are the two items I want. But that doesn't apply to your original statement.
