Maybe if it would happen more often and everywhere on the world, that would stop self-proclaiming false prophets. :)

If they started suing all religions for broken promises... 0) there would be a lot fewer people starving to death or dying of disease in the third world. 1) there would be less morons going around telling us all how to live according to some bronze age work of fiction. 2) the world would be more technologically advanced and there would be less ignorance 3) the governments of the world would have less intrusion into our lives

I think with a minor edit, your final point would be true:

So, you are saying that, on the whole, religion has no influence on governments? Ever been to the middle east? the USA? Hell, even here in the UK no government can rule without consent of the head of the Church of England! My point, therefore, stands.

BTW, I did not uni you. I never said it has no influence on governments, my point was that the absence of religion would have little to do with the level of government intrusion on our lives (which was your original 4th point). Money and power is a larger motivator of politicians in the Western world, religion is just a means to control people. Judging by their actions, I highly doubt that any recent U.S. President had any real affiliation with their religion, it's all a show.

But they got into the habit of intrusion thanks to the Church. It was the Church that demanded tithes, and they would use force to gather them. That force would be supplied by the Executive, as the Church's influence waned, the executive subsumed the intrusive ways.

This goes back to my point that religion is a means of control, and yes in Europe after the fall of Rome, organized religions were more powerful than governments. However, abolishing religion would in no way decrease the amount of government intrusion there currently is.

What a very good idea -- make people responsible for their actions; who'da thunk of it?
