After one week in the gym the pain from muscle soreness is killing me. Any Advice?

Are you concentrating on one muscle group? Try alternating your training, and if you continue to feel sore, it's very likely that your problem here is that you are overloading your muscles and trying to do more than you are actually capable of. Higher reps at a lower weight can be much more effective.

Ibuprofen and warm baths. No gain without pain as they say. ;P

I think I will do that for the mean while then move to the muscle building

Anything based on acetylsalicylic acid (Aspirin) should help muscles to get rid of lactic acid.

You pay an advance fee? 2 year contract and now you are stuck. Persistence and time, will prove to be of benefit provided you are not over doing it. I recently started riding bike again and the first week was heck. I started with shorter routes but after a couple of weeks I was back into the routine again.

You're probably doing too much, too quickly. If you are doing strength training using free weights, you also might be using incorrect form when doing the exercises. Weight training every day isn't a good idea either, unless you plan carefully and alternate muscle groups. Muscles need about 48 hours to recover before training them again. There are two kinds of pain from exercise. 'Good' pain is a certain amount of discomfort after exercise, and maybe some mild soreness the next day. You can tell you made an effort. In the worst case a little aspirin or ibuprofen helps. When you don't feel 'good' pain any longer, it's time to increase what you're doing and challenge yourself a little more. 'Bad' pain comes from an injury, which typically results from the things I mentioned at the top. Warming up before (5-10 minutes on a treadmill, stationary bike, or other cardio machine) and stretching after exercise is always a good idea. If your gym has trainers available, ask them to help you adjust your workout to something appropriate to your age and fitness level, and to make sure you're doing the routines properly.

                      - don't stop - use lighter weights with faster/longer repetitions. - ask the trainers for good "form" on how to use weights (and/or machines). - stretch after the training. (boring but will help a lot in the first few weeks) M.

If your gym has a sauna, I'd put aside a bit of time at the end of each session for the sauna. Not sure if this is good advise but it worked for me the last time I did any serious work in the gym.

If you are just starting out, then some pain is normal: DOMS[^]. Take it easy, you have the rest of your entire life to get this stuff down. Also, you are going to get some good gains early on. Don't make the mistake of adding extra time to your routine because you can work out longer. That gets boring fast. Try adding intensity instead, most people don't know how hard they can safely push themselves and how much of a benefit they can get. Also, don't expect linear returns on effort. You are going to hit plateaus, and remember that you only get stronger when you are resting.

Alternate upper body and lower body between sessions with a little streching for the other half. Yep, it is going to hurt for a while and heat (I use a wheat pillow warmed up in the microwave) helps the healing.

I had to learn to hard way, that my body doesn't like Ibuprofen (and also some other painkillers). It's a real bummer, if you ask your GP how to get rid of some pain and all he subscribes is painkillers your body doesn't tolerate and on which he reacts in "funny" ways.
