After one week in the gym the pain from muscle soreness is killing me. Any Advice?
If your gym has a sauna, I'd put aside a bit of time at the end of each session for the sauna. Not sure if this is good advise but it worked for me the last time I did any serious work in the gym.

Ibuprofen and warm baths. No gain without pain as they say. ;P

Ibuprofen
Avoid that if you have any kind of digestive problem.

Stop going to the gym :)

Or go more often :) Amazing, how either works.

I've given 5 to both posts, because it is unarguably the right answer.

If you are just starting out, then some pain is normal: DOMS[^]. Take it easy, you have the rest of your entire life to get this stuff down. Also, you are going to get some good gains early on. Don't make the mistake of adding extra time to your routine because you can work out longer. That gets boring fast. Try adding intensity instead, most people don't know how hard they can safely push themselves and how much of a benefit they can get. Also, don't expect linear returns on effort. You are going to hit plateaus, and remember that you only get stronger when you are resting.

Alternate upper body and lower body between sessions with a little streching for the other half. Yep, it is going to hurt for a while and heat (I use a wheat pillow warmed up in the microwave) helps the healing.

I had to learn to hard way, that my body doesn't like Ibuprofen (and also some other painkillers). It's a real bummer, if you ask your GP how to get rid of some pain and all he subscribes is painkillers your body doesn't tolerate and on which he reacts in "funny" ways.

That is a bummer. Is there anything that you can take? I don't find Ibuprofen particularly good as a pain killer; what I do take it for is to bring down any inflammation as it is also an NSAID.

Drink beer. It cures pretty much anything.

I find a wheat pillow warmed up in the microwave helps with specific pains.

Higher reps at a lower weight can be much more effective.
I think I will do that for the mean while then move to the muscle building
Do more research on weight training and more importantly on muscle recovery. When you train you are actually breaking down muscle tissue, when you rest the muscles after training they muscle tissue is repaired. The body doesn't just put the muscle tissue back, it increases them a small amount in case you are stupid enough to do enough work to destroy the muscle tissue again. This is how weight training / body building works, slowly over time the muscle increases enough to be noticably biger. The biggest problem Joe Average has is he reads all about the training routines of Arnold and his steroid taking mates. Steroids increase the rate of repair of the muscles, this allows for more frequent training. If (as I suspect) you are not using steroids, you need to allow more time for the muscles to repair themselves. It's been about 17 years since I've been able to get to the gym, so my ideas and knowledge could be a bit out dates, but the core knowledge is sound. Train 3 or 4 days aweek and allow the muscles time to repair. Each day do a major muscle group and one or two minor groups that are not directly used by the exercises of the major muscle exercises. Following is my rough workout by memory. Monday Chest Biceps Calves Tuesday Upper Back Lower Back Hamstrings Wednesday Rest Thursday Quadraceps Triceps Abdominals Friday Shoulders Forearms Weekend Rest The only problem I can see but can't resolve right now, is that Biceps worked on Monday will be used quite a bit Tuesday in the Upper Back exercises. The Triceps worked on Thursday will also be needed quite a bit for Shoulders on Friday. Though it shouldn't impact that much.

After one week in the gym the pain from muscle soreness is killing me. Any Advice?
When you first start working out again after a long period of absence you will get the pain. It is too late now for the following advice, but: The pain, usually, is from a build-up of lactic acid. It takes blood flow and circulation to remove lactic acid from the muscles. The only effective way to get blood flowing to the muscles is exercise. So, usually, if I am really sore I plan a light lift day for the same muscle group on the very next day. Something that is not stressful but uses the muscles. This gets the blood circulating and removes the pain faster. Also, keep in mind, your body will adapt very quickly so this won't be a big issue if you keep it up. Lastly, remember you have to work into it. Most people quit lifting after week because of the pain. You probably lifted a lot more than you should have based on your previous state of development. Ease back into it. A great starting series no matter the exercise is to lift 5 sets at 12 reps choosing the weight so that your muscles are moderately tired after the 5 set. Then after a week or two step up to a normal routine. 3x10 to failure at the end of the third set is a great way to get real sore real fast. Eating bananas is also good.

Funny, I always remember it as "Great minds think alike, but fools seldom differ." Not sure which applies in this case though ;-)
