As many of you are aware, I've recently gotten back into the model car hobby, and post uypdate notices here on current projects. As you might imagine, I also frequent a couple of model car magazine forums, and likewise, I post a link to my current project. Now, I pay for my own web host instead of relying on free photo sites because I don't wa nt to support a free site's revenue stream by forcing vistors to suffer through endless advertising for sh*t they don't care about. I also put a lot of effort into crafting my web site, not to mention the hour or so that it takes to update a single day's progress on a given model (including taking pictures, post-processing them, doing the write-up, and finally, putting it all on the page). I understand that the overwhelming majority of other model builders simply don't have the skills, resources and/or the desire to do it the same way, and will just take pictures, and upload them to photo-sharing sites, or add the pics directly to the forum. I get it. Really. I don't particularly care to read everyone's comments/opinions on the model in question (because I'm not the one building it), and I generally don't leave any unless it's an exceptional build. I also don't care to go to the free photo sites because they're generally slow, obtrusive, and just plain crap, but if that's the way they want to show their stuff, so be it. I say nothing and simply use what's provided. Last week, I posted a message about the Boss 429 I'm working on. I included no pictures - just a brief explanation and a link to the project's build page, informing them that the build log and pictures were located there. I didn't see the point in posting the same photos to a handful of forums, when a single point of access would be sufficient (and more efficient). So far, I've gotten no fewer than half a dozen people saying they won't go to the link posted in the message because they'd rather see the pictures in the forum. One guy said he couldn't be bothered to go to some "wiz-kid's" site just because he (the wiz-kid) wanted to "show off his web site". Being 55 and having been a programmer for 30 years, I don't reaally think I qualify as a "wiz-kid". In the end, I'm expected to put up with free-tards who can't muster the MINIMAL funds necessary to free me from having to be tracked and advertised to, yet they can't be "bothered" to click a single link? (just sayin') I've seen forums where they expected that you upload the image on their system instead of linking from other sources. The rational is that in case the other sources stop working, the image in old threads will still be present whatever happens to the original sources. There are so many hobbies forum with dead image links that it is fustrating.

(just sayin') I've seen forums where they expected that you upload the image on their system instead of linking from other sources. The rational is that in case the other sources stop working, the image in old threads will still be present whatever happens to the original sources. There are so many hobbies forum with dead image links that it is fustrating.

I don't do that but they don't require it, and many of the images in their forums are on free photo-sharing sites. In a cruel twist of irony, a good number of those links are dead (because those free sites have a maximum life time associated with uploaded material - go figure. In my case, I'm not linking to photos at all, so the user will never be greeted with a series of red X's (unless they're behing a hyper-restrictive firewall like I am). I don't actually upload files to a site unless required to do so, mostly because they limit the size (in one way or another).
