Should I buy my wife a smart phone?

My wife desperately needs a new phone. Her phone was donated to her by father after hers died. She's up for a new phone from Verizon, but most of the non-smart phones they sell have ratings of 3 out of 5 or less. I like my Droid Incredible, so I thought about buying her a Droid or a WinPhone 7. Pros: Up to date GPS without lugging around our out-of-date Garmin She can check her e-mail for anything important without having to be at home. She can stay occupied in the car when I'm driving and look up stuff for me (like when traveling out of town).* The phones all have higher ratings than non-smart phones. Cons: It's $30/month extra. It's something else to distract her from other things she would rather do. Anyone ventured in this direction before? *Of course she could do this on my Android phone, but she doesn't use it enough to get used to it.
I bought my Wife a Samsung Omina 7 (Windows Phone 7), I own a iPhone 3G. Gotta say the Omina is a cool phone and I like the WP7 UI, I'm pushing the company to upgrade my iPhone to the WP7.

You should try out the HP Veer. Not because I like it, but because I want to find out if it's any good.

If you do check out ALL available subscriptions... I had a subscription for 17,50 a month. Needed to pay about 100 extra for the phone and I got 100 calling minutes OR sms'es. Right after I bought it I found this bargain on the internet. Also 17,50 a month, but the same phone was free of charge, I got 100 sms'es AND 4 hours of calling minutes. Also unlimited internet access free of charge. Luckily I was able to take my just bought phone back and get a refund. Subscriptions can differ A WHOLE FRIGGIN LOT from one provider to the other... Just saying $30 extra a month isn't necessary if you look in the right places :)

That's why I'm still using my old LG Decoy slider... I can afford the extra cash, but I don't think the added benefits are worth the added cost. Not for me, anyway. One more "Con" though. The more complex the phone, the more that can go wrong. KISS principles apply to hardware just as they do to software.

If you can afford 30/month extra, by all means. Just got myself a new phone, my wife a new phone, and a mobile phone for our home number. It's been well worth it.

I actually did have this VOIP thing from T-Mobile: they supplied us with a special router and phone for $10/month. It was absolute junk. Voice quality was bad, service went in and out, and eventually the router stopped being able to connect to the mothership. Finally, T-Mobile discontinued the service. This time around, I opted for a mobile phone. Service is just better.

Judah HimangoOk, I have Vonage and it's pretty good for calls within the US. It's when you make international calls that it feels like doing a voice chat on a 14 Kbps modem.

For one, Vonnage sucks. My lady recently dropped her landline for Vonnage and we can rarely complete a 5 minute phone call before she has to switch to her cell phone. The latency and dropped packets are absolutely intolerable, and her Internet service is faster and more reliable than mine.
