Filling in rat holes
-
So the rats in my back yard have gotten out of control. There must be about 10-20 of them that have built a next under my garage and under my back porch. Kill traps are not the best option since we have other wildlife, squirrels and bunnies, and they frankly don't make traps large enough for these rats. My neighbor has started placing rat poison in their holes, in my yard, without my permission, only telling me once my dog tried to retrieve a bag of it from the hole. He has also placed a bag near my garden. I could easily shoot them on site with my .22 pellet gun, but given local laws, I'd be in jail forever. Anyways, my question is, what is the best way to fill in the holes? Is there an expanding foam that I can spray in there that will solidify and seal them off? Since I can't stop my neighbor from poisoning the holes I'd like to seal the poison into the holes so my dogs don't get to it.

You have no laws that prevent your neighbour from leaving poison around on your property without asking your permission?

I don't want to get into it with an old 'nam vet, he's lived there his entire life, I'm just a renter, the cops wouldn't even side with me if I called them.

wouldn't that constitute trespassing? you could maybe get some quickcrete from home depot or where ever and pour a runny mix of that down the holes. Let it top off about 4 inches below ground surface so it doesn't get into mower blades.

I think a NATO airstrike is in order. Call them up, say you have a Al Quida rats and the neighbor is a chemical weapons specialist for them ;P You should be able to get some of this at the local hardware http://greatstuff.dow.com/[^]

I'm dealing with that problem now. It took me a while to get my foundation and siding sealed up with this: Great stuff[^] The neighbors had a construction refuse pile that they just cleared out so now the critters are hiding all over the yard. He's trying fox urine to scare them away. I'm probably going to stick a trap in a box with a rat sized hole in it.

Ask if he's got any left-over napalm in his shed. Seriously though, that sucks, he could have killed your dog.

Surely it would class as trespassing?

Perhaps cement/concrete would do?

I have one of these: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italian_Greyhound[^] and one of these: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boston_Terrier[^] And 2 cats with front claws that are twins of Henry's cat. The dogs chase the rats out of the yard, haven't caught one yet, but I can't live them out there unattended for long. My cats to a great job of keeping rats/mice out of the house/porch/basement. They've killed 2 of them in my basement years ago before I even knew we had a problem.

I don't want to get into with him, he's a good guy, but has a fear of rats. I don't want to do something as permanent as concrete yet, as I'm a renter and don't want it to harden and unsettle anything like the porch.

Yep, but he's an old man, and usually a pretty decent guy. I might try the foam first, I'm afraid of doing concrete since I don't own the place.

the crete is enviro friendly(as in no pollutants) be careful with what foam you get as that could possibly be considered pollution/contamination etc.. if the wrong person got wind of it. That's why I suggested crete and leave it well below ground level. then you can kick dirt over it to top out the holes.

This is Chicago, my apartment was built in 1880 and is full of asbestos, mold, and lead paint. I'd be improving it by sealing everything in. Honestly though, the greatstuff from DOW has an outdoor one that is fish friendy, so I might try that.
