Filling in rat holes

So the rats in my back yard have gotten out of control. There must be about 10-20 of them that have built a next under my garage and under my back porch. Kill traps are not the best option since we have other wildlife, squirrels and bunnies, and they frankly don't make traps large enough for these rats. My neighbor has started placing rat poison in their holes, in my yard, without my permission, only telling me once my dog tried to retrieve a bag of it from the hole. He has also placed a bag near my garden. I could easily shoot them on site with my .22 pellet gun, but given local laws, I'd be in jail forever. Anyways, my question is, what is the best way to fill in the holes? Is there an expanding foam that I can spray in there that will solidify and seal them off? Since I can't stop my neighbor from poisoning the holes I'd like to seal the poison into the holes so my dogs don't get to it.

the crete is enviro friendly(as in no pollutants) be careful with what foam you get as that could possibly be considered pollution/contamination etc.. if the wrong person got wind of it. That's why I suggested crete and leave it well below ground level. then you can kick dirt over it to top out the holes.

This is Chicago, my apartment was built in 1880 and is full of asbestos, mold, and lead paint. I'd be improving it by sealing everything in. Honestly though, the greatstuff from DOW has an outdoor one that is fish friendy, so I might try that.

Get a cat: that'll get rid of them sharpish. When we had cats we never saw a rat or a mouse.

I live in an urban area, my cat got out once and ended up in the city pound within 6 hours. That's a good thing as there is very heavy traffic and stray cats to contend with. See my response to DD to see the animals I have in my pack.

I've been looking to move for 2+ years, I've put offers on 2 places, but my requirements are so specific it's difficult to find anything. I play music, often loudly, have 2 dogs, 2 cats, and garden. This is hard to find in the city.

Hmmm, ammonia... I was going to run a hose into it, then chase that with some Cheyenne powder, shove some steel wool in there, then seal with foam. Ammonia may make the mix, too.

considered moving outside the city? longer drive = more gas but usually cheaper rent so it about evens out? That is what I do here and while this is not the windy city, I would think it wouldn't be THAT much different. You end up close to the same on money but out a little more time to cover the drive, However it could be worth it if you like a little more freedom of how you live.

That is what I do here and while this is not the windy city, I would think it wouldn't be THAT much different. You end up close to the same on money but out a little more time to cover the drive, However it could be worth it if you like a little more freedom of how you live.

I've considered it, but Ms. Wiz is definitely against it. I would have a lot less time, and I think my commuting costs could get pricey. All of my hobbies would require me to stay in the city after work, and most weekend nights and some weekend days. I am still open to collar burbs (near burbs) but they are pretty much the same as where I live now (standard 25' by 125' lots).

Then your only option is to shoot them as you see them. I recommend either a pellet gun (not so accurate), or a .22 rifle that can reliably shoot sub-sonic ammo. The smaller the load, the softer the report, so neighbors probably won't hear you. One last piece of advice - don't bother dressing like Rambo, because it won't intimidate the rats. I eradicated a family of squirrels with a pellet gun a few years back. They had taken to stripping our new deck in the back yard for nesting material. Six tree rats met their maker as a result, and out of a tin of 300 pellets, I still have 293 pellets.

The yard is about 25 x 30 so it wouldn't even be fair, but man I'd be in jail for life if anyone saw me. I have a 22 pellet rifle, but the thing is not subsonic, it's louder than my Model 41.

I have considered smoke bombs. My neighbor is pretty shell-shocked from the war still, so if I'm going to light fireworks, I need to give him a good warning. I'm pretty sure my place would burn down though.
