Poor old Australians

You are children, naive children. You may not do the things your parents did, because the nanny state knows best. Your rights are being eroded, your freedoms taken from you. But the puritans will tell you it is for the best. They will tell you what to do, where to go, how to think. They will even tell you how to raise your children. Even art is to be subjected to what the state thinks is good for you.[^] Oh Australia, what hast thou become?

That's hilarious. I thought you lived in the UK ? Do you not ? I don't see anything wrong with informing people that an art exhibit contains nudity, precisely because, while I remain free to raise my kids to see nothing wrong with that, other people have the right to be uptight like, say, most Americans, and shield their kids from the human body. I admit to not knowing enough British people to know if the prudishness of the ones I've known represents a norm, or a statistical aberration. I do know that the UK invented the 'nanny state'. It's perhaps worth mentioning that the state museum in Melbourne, has an exhibit on the body and sexuality that includes naked photos of both genders, including pre pubescent, and at ages where I was surprised, b/c I thought they'd attract sickos. There is, of course, a sign informing people so they can make an informed decision about going in there, but I've taken both my kids through it, and it certainly was not something I'd expect to see in a 'nanny state' in the way you seem to infer.

They will even tell you how to raise your children.'They' are just a senate sub committee who've written a report. As the article said, there was an incident last year where an art exhibition displayed photos of a 13 year old girl, the media got into it and public debate ensued & the government commissioned a report in response. More public discussion will no doubt follow, some legislation may be proposed and debated. Sounds reasonably healthy to me.

When it comes to TV, Cinema etc the UK, like the rest of Europe, is very liberal when it comes to nudity, sex and swearing, at least compared too the States. I find it amazing when I watch American shows and they blur out arses :wtf: I even watched Americas got Talent the other day and one act was Sumo Wrestling and they blurred the arses out. I don't know about Ozzie TV, but I would assume it is somewhere between the UK and US on that front. As for the 'Nanny State' you are right, I reckon even if they are giving your Art age restrictions, you still have more freedom than us Brits. We have an extensive CCTV network that is used to raise money for the local authorities by fining law-abiding citizens for trivial matters. I am currently being chased for £75, for discarding a half-eaten burger. As my car reg. was recorded on CCTV, I have no defence. To put it in perspective, £75 is about the same you would get if convicted of a minor assault.

I did not see those photos, but I was lead to believe by the media ( who I don't trust, I admit ), that they were sexual in nature. I don't think it's healthy that people can do anything they want, if they call it art. On the other hand, one of the naked girls in the museum is around 13, so it's not like it's impossible to show a naked girl of that age in Australia, if it's for the right reasons and in the right context.

I assume you're in the UK ? There's time periods here where you can't swear as it's when kids watch, but at night, I'd say you can say close to anything you want.

Wow - so, something that's biodegradable, and the birds would eat ? That's amazing. We have speed cameras here, they are a little out of control, but not general CCTV for things like that.

It's a very subjective issue. Perhaps photos need to be classified more like print or film media as they show 'someone' as opposed to say a sculpture that is more generic. I Wonder, did the exhibition get a long queue of guys in trench coats? Dave just wishes he had 20 degree sunny days that he called winter, beaches with actual sand, cold beer, good looking women and MM for a neighbour.

It was the wrapper too. Nearly every street has them for 'our security', but obviously anyone looking to commit a serious crime just wears a hood. But this was a mobile camera attached to the top of a van and parked in a Macdonalds car-park, obviously for the sole purpose of catching hardened criminals like me, as they have your Reg plate, you can't deny it so it's pickings.

Yeah, the speed cameras here strike me as a focus on victimless crime, and revenue raising.

Unfortunately a large proportion of the Australian public are stupid enough to NEED to be told what's good and what's not. However a lot of what they're being told is utterly ridiculous and incorrect. We live in an age of boundless information, but with no more capacity to process it than the generation before. There are so many conflicting world-views it seems whichever is shouted the loudest people tend to agree with. We are given the conclusions, not the facts with which to determine our OWN conclusion. I think you make a good point but it's not just Australia that's going this way, the whole world is going this way. It's like an apartheid of conservatism and liberalism. Soon there'll be conservative only pubs where they serve iced tea and fruit juice with barbershop quartets and slapstick comedy for entertainment, while the liberal pub over the road is handing out scotch by the bottle, serve up shots of a different kind during Heroin Happy Hour and all the barmaids are available (for a few hundred bucks). It's like moderate people don't exist any more, everybody's got some opinion they're going to shove down your throat.
