I tend to agree in part. But I think there's more moderate people than the media wants you to think. It just sells more media to divide people in to opposing, extreme camps. It's hard to hate someone moderate, and a moderate view is not easy to turn in to a soundbite. All people on the right want to starve the poor, all people on the left want to give free heroin to junkies. THAT is a headline. Only stupid people read the paper, and believe what it says. The US, by the way, is far worse in this regard than Australia. And incredibly uptight about biology, to boot.

Agreed 100%! I guess you're right about the media thing, which is something I'm quite often annoyed with. Isn't a free media one of the sine quibus non of a functioning democracy, the thought being they will hold the democracy accountable for its actions? The capitalistic nature of the media seems not to do that idea justice. BTW are you a Brisbanite? Are you familiar with the free MX paper and its "vent your spleen" section? I have a masochistic need to read it every afternoon even though the ridiculous and useless comments in it make me angry/sad to be a human being...

I have been toying for a while with the idea of starting an anonymous "blog" type thing where I write responses to the ridiculous things said in that section and tell people how stupid they are. But I don't want to be that guy, you know the one with the turtleneck who pretends he knows everything about the world... I read the comments in our local paper for the same reason. I am also astounded that the paper prints a survey. You know, stop people on the street and ask 'should the government spend more to house the homeless ?' or 'do we need a carbon tax ?', or 'do we benefit from being part of NATO ?'. How does the person on the street offer an informed view on this, and why should I care what they think ?

Celsius, most likely... This morning I tried to put the coffee jar lid on my cup of coffee and dropped it in there, then subsequently attempted to retrieve it from my cup of boiling water... I burnt my tongue because what do you do when you burn your fingers? You put them in your mouth! That's like a 100 point IQ penalty right there. Either that or I need a holiday...

That's hilarious. I thought you lived in the UK ? Do you not ? I don't see anything wrong with informing people that an art exhibit contains nudity, precisely because, while I remain free to raise my kids to see nothing wrong with that, other people have the right to be uptight like, say, most Americans, and shield their kids from the human body. I admit to not knowing enough British people to know if the prudishness of the ones I've known represents a norm, or a statistical aberration. I do know that the UK invented the 'nanny state'. It's perhaps worth mentioning that the state museum in Melbourne, has an exhibit on the body and sexuality that includes naked photos of both genders, including pre pubescent, and at ages where I was surprised, b/c I thought they'd attract sickos. There is, of course, a sign informing people so they can make an informed decision about going in there, but I've taken both my kids through it, and it certainly was not something I'd expect to see in a 'nanny state' in the way you seem to infer.

I kind of agree with you, depending on what the law is going to be. If its just a clasification saying a painting contains nudity then thats OK since some might be offended. Ifc its a law thats going to class nude paintings as porn then its a bit sick because there is a big difference between an image of a nude whose intent is to sexually arouse and one whose intent is to show the natural aspect of the human body. As for prudishness in the UK, we arent at all IMO. :)

'They' are just a senate sub committee who've written a report. As the article said, there was an incident last year where an art exhibition displayed photos of a 13 year old girl, the media got into it and public debate ensued & the government commissioned a report in response. More public discussion will no doubt follow, some legislation may be proposed and debated. Sounds reasonably healthy to me.

What of the great art of the renaissance. There are pictures of Mary with her tits out firing milk into the mouth of St Bernard. (It is called Leibfraumilch) Or this one, Here[^] for example. Not only do you have a 13 year old girl with her tits out, there are lots of very young naked children. Does this really require a government agency to tell you whether it is suitable or not?

I guess perhaps you're illiterate. However, ratings and censorship are not the same thing. It's perfectly reasonably for art that involves nudity to be classified as such, for sexually confronting art to be rated as not suitable for minors ( porn is rated now, and unless we're willing to go down a path where the government decides what IS art, who is to say that Penthouse is less art than a gallery with photos of naked people in sexual positions ? ), and if art involves getting children to pose in sexual positions, for the government to have a say in how minors are treated. None of that has anything to do with the government deciding the merits of art, or banning anything that is analogous to the art you refer to. Amusingly, this has not even made the news here, probably because it's a beat up story based on something that is unlikely to ever get results here.
