When it comes to TV, Cinema etc the UK, like the rest of Europe, is very liberal when it comes to nudity, sex and swearing, at least compared too the States. I find it amazing when I watch American shows and they blur out arses :wtf: I even watched Americas got Talent the other day and one act was Sumo Wrestling and they blurred the arses out. I don't know about Ozzie TV, but I would assume it is somewhere between the UK and US on that front. As for the 'Nanny State' you are right, I reckon even if they are giving your Art age restrictions, you still have more freedom than us Brits. We have an extensive CCTV network that is used to raise money for the local authorities by fining law-abiding citizens for trivial matters. I am currently being chased for £75, for discarding a half-eaten burger. As my car reg. was recorded on CCTV, I have no defence. To put it in perspective, £75 is about the same you would get if convicted of a minor assault.

The explanation I've gotten for movie censorship is that the director creates his cut of the movie. He then edits out all the sex and labels the result the US Theatrical Release. He then goes back to the directors cut, edits out all the violence and labels it the European theatrical release. Both our societies are insane for thinking we can make something go away by pretending really hard that it doesn't exist.

I guess perhaps you're illiterate. However, ratings and censorship are not the same thing. It's perfectly reasonably for art that involves nudity to be classified as such, for sexually confronting art to be rated as not suitable for minors ( porn is rated now, and unless we're willing to go down a path where the government decides what IS art, who is to say that Penthouse is less art than a gallery with photos of naked people in sexual positions ? ), and if art involves getting children to pose in sexual positions, for the government to have a say in how minors are treated. None of that has anything to do with the government deciding the merits of art, or banning anything that is analogous to the art you refer to. Amusingly, this has not even made the news here, probably because it's a beat up story based on something that is unlikely to ever get results here.

You do realize that this only true for broadcast network tv, which consists of maybe 5 channels?

You are children, naive children. You may not do the things your parents did, because the nanny state knows best. Your rights are being eroded, your freedoms taken from you. But the puritans will tell you it is for the best. They will tell you what to do, where to go, how to think. They will even tell you how to raise your children. Even art is to be subjected to what the state thinks is good for you.[^] Oh Australia, what hast thou become?

They need to lay off the arts. At least the 1st Amendment here is protective of artistic expression.

That is their choice, not government(FCC) censorship. I'm still waiting for the f bomb to work into the ABC family channel.

Yes the joke is that out of Languages, Maths and History, I am only good at two of them, Mathematics. Thus implying I can't do Maths either. In truth I, like 90% of English, find learning another language impossile. History, only half good they choose to ignore big chunks of history over here, the British Empire for example isn't even mentioned, so my lack of knowledge on that will astound you. I did Electronics to Degree level so my Maths is OK.

According to results of a nationwide test released last month, most fourth graders in the U.S. are unable to say why Abraham Lincoln was an important figure and few high school seniors able to identify China as the North Korean ally that fought American troops during the Korean War. Over all, 20 percent of fourth graders, 17 percent of eighth graders and 12 percent of high school seniors demonstrated proficiency on the exam. As George Santayana said, "Those who refuse to learn from history are condemned to repeat it." It appears that neither your country nor mine even knows who Santayana is.

Just last night, the 12-year old girl in our care, was all excited about something she learnt in RE and wanted to tell us. It was Adam and Eve! Despite going to Sunday school for 3 years, she has got to 12 without knowing about Adam & Eve. We were gobsmacked.

When they stopped allowing teachers to belt cheeky little horrors the country was already lost. And yeah there is a strong whiff of nanny in Oz.
