Tarting up the resume in the hope of getting to the interview is bad enough, but having to pimp yourself via a cover letter to get the resume read in the first place sucks arse big time. The creation of the cover letter is killing me at the moment.

Sometime in the next few months, I'll have to apply for....my current job. They're reorganizing everything and we all need to reapply because we'll be working for a different hierarchy within the org. No cover letter, though.

I do the cover letter and resume (unless they specify no cover letter), and if I get an interview, I send an email thanking the interviewers for their time. For my current job, I was one of three equally qualified candidates they were considering, and the fact that I sent a thank you note got me the job.

That advice is gold! Also, when applying for several jobs at the same time, let them know when you already found an other job so they can throw you out of the selection procedure. It's very annoying to pick a candidate, call him and then find out he's already working somewhere else. It's a small world...

same thing happened to me, a couple jobs back. i was the only one to send a thank you, and the manager said that's what got me the job. of course i wouldn't have sent that thank-you note if my wife wasn't a recruiter and didn't insist that i do it. but, she was right!

Keep this in mind: interested is interesting. Remember when doing this that you're applying for their job not a job.

I guess resumes and cover letters are not an issue with me then - not even a thought in my mind...they never were; you just did them to get work.

Got the resume, that's not an issue, it's the cover letter I'm specifically hating at the moment, pretty sure I mentioned that in the original post, but at this point not willing to bet money on that until I re-read it.

You did. Every job I have ever interviewed for required a cover letter with the resume. To me they are one in the same. What kind of job are you applying for?

It's also annoying to be told that you have a job, and that it will take two weeks to get final approval. three months later I get a call from the guy(this is after all calls/emails from my career center staff were ignored for almost two months. It was an interview set up through school) and he wants to get pissy with me because I took a job elsewhere....

I got my current job( that I was not really qualified for on paper) because the interviewer worked with my last boss ten years ago. I mention the last boss in passing, not as a reference but just in passing, and the interviewer called him 5 minutes after I walked out of the building. two hours later I got the call and the official offer. A coupe of days ago I got confirmation that the sole reason I was offered the position was based on my last boss's comments and opinion of me. Goes to show how small a world it is and that you never know when some guy you pissed off or impressed will have a great impact on a job interview or some such thing.

Not impossible, but unlikely. But worse comes to worst, I continue where I am, working for the "old" regime as a strictly local person instead of as a regional kind of guy. Regional is better because...Telework! Or Virtual work*! (If I want to, that is.) *"Virtual work" meaning I can sit anywhere there's a place for me, hopefully closer then the 45 miles commute I currently do.

It's a System Administration role, I've never had to do a cover letter before, this is pretty much how it went. 1987 - Job straight out of school, pretty much, haven't got 2 heads your in. 1989 - Started as a programmer at same job. 1995 - Senior Programming role, put resume in with agency, sent to interview, got the job. 1999 - Senior Consultant, someonein the company knew of me, I got asked for an interview, got the job 2002 - Work For the Dole Supervisor - was retrenched and this was the only job I could get, interview easier than back in 1987. 2005 - Manage a pub - Helped the Licensee keep a job back in 1996, he owed me, I needed a job 2007 - Systems Engineer, had done weekend work for the company starting in 2002, they needed someone full time, it was me 2008 - Not even listed on resume - The interviewer was 7 levels below me on the evolutuionary scale, got the job 2009 - Senior Systems Engineer - See 2007, owner of that company actually contracts at the big end of town, needed an employee, interview was foregone conclusion 2011 - ICT Officer - Need to move, this is a customer, I have done 7 months on site in the last 17, should be a lay down misere, but need to jump through hoops Hating having to do one now.

I got a job last November, smaller company, me moving up to a more senior role, I asked for and got more than the techie that interviewed me. They needed me as they were growing beyond their current means. Unfortunately they didn't get the big new customer that was merely a formality, 8 months later I still haven't got the job amd they have hired a couple of junior staff instead.

They have Global and Institute in their name and it's for a Systems Engineer or Systems Administratorm position depending on how you like to name the style of position.

same thing happened to me, a couple jobs back. i was the only one to send a thank you, and the manager said that's what got me the job. of course i wouldn't have sent that thank-you note if my wife wasn't a recruiter and didn't insist that i do it. but, she was right!

Tarting up the resume in the hope of getting to the interview is bad enough, but having to pimp yourself via a cover letter to get the resume read in the first place sucks arse big time. The creation of the cover letter is killing me at the moment.

Use a recruiter, you only have to focus on the interview then.

I know what you mean. Especially with the requirements you quoted! I once did a cover letter for a job I really would have liked, but really didn't have the skills for, by listing out their requirements with comments saying how I could do it with my eyes closed, I'd won awards for it etc. then, at the bottom, put something like "just kidding - no relevant experience, but I'm really keen, and would be brilliant at the job - read my resume and take the gamble" I was gobsmacked when the MD called me for an informal chat. And somewhat disappointed that the salary they were offering wouldn't have paid for dog food.

If I get this job I will finally be back to earning what I did back in 1999 (negotiated in late 1998), I'm realy earning shit money where I am. I can see how I have gotten to where I am, but it still don't make me feel any better.
