It's not the first time this has happened, but here we go... I wanted to know more about the term "constraint" in the context of UML. So I Googled "UML constraint" and a helpful looking page from IBM gets listed first. Great. I click on it... and all of a sudden it's all in Japanese. OK, my PC thinks it's in Japan and thinks it needs to speak Japanese all the time, but I don't understand techie talk in Japanese so I need an English site. The site appears to be in English on Google, but the link takes me to a Japanese page. So I glance at the page and find the option to change region and language settings. I change my setting to United Kingdom - English (why you're not supposed to speak English in Japan I'm not sure), and the thing jumps to a generic entry site to IBM. Damn... So I enter "UML constraint" in the search box again, and again, the search result gives me a helpful looking site as the first choice. Not surprisingly, it is in a different colour indicating that I'd already visited the site. Well, I have. I clicked on the link again, and I'm back on the Japanese site again :doh: If I wanted to look something up in Japanese, I'd use a Japanese search engine with Japanese key words. I used an English version of Google (.UK if I'm not mistaken) with English key words and this is what I get! For god's sake, how hard is it for people to realise that not everyone speaks the language of the country they're currently staying in!?

Very hard apparently. I have that problem all the time. IMO websites should only look at the "Accept-Language" part of the HTTP request, because users can change that to what they actually want.

Doesn't work in this case, I'm afraid... One more thing I noticed. I typed "google.co.uk" in the address bar of the web browser and I got Google.co.uk in JAPANESE! :doh: Can I go home yet!? (its 17:50...)

To me it seems more like an IBM issue, Google shows the english version but when you get to IBM's page it decides that the request comes from Japan and shows the japanese version instead (or something similar). Take Googles cached page instead, it's in english (just tried it).

Please see above. It's not that the search engine is naff, it's the website the search result is pointing at that is naff. On being clicked on by me who apparently lives in Japan it displays its contents in Japanese for me.

in IE -> Tools -> Internet Options -> on the first tab select button "Languages" (at the bottom) and make sure an english setting is on top of the list. Not sure if you looked there already or if it helps, but it's worth a try.

IMO, Google is right on the line between "smart and helpful" and "too clever to be useful". lately, i've been doing a lot of searches that end up with very few results (all arcane Unix crap). but Google has changed the way searches happen from "did you mean ____ ?" to "we're going to search for this because we get more hits ____ ! click to search for what you entered." if i'm not paying close attention, i'll end up down blind alleys, as it's searching on terms that i didn't want it to, and not searching on the terms i do want. they need to add a way to turn that shit off. and all the little junk they've attached to the links needs to go away, too. the ratings and previews and selection arrows , etc. are all clutter. Google was great because it was simple. now, it's cluttered and patronizing.

Google's been doing that for years if the disparity in returns is high enough that it's convinced you fat fingered something instead of just suspecting it...

seems to me the behavior up until recently was to search on what you entered and tell you about the 'better' search as an option, not the other way around.
