    Here in Brazil pay cuts are illegal. As a boss, you either fire the person or keep his salary the same. I see dumb people

        I just talked to my tech recruiter who said that I'd be taking a 10% cut in my salary for next year. :-( And I had just suffered a cut in August! X| On the positive side he said my contract would be extended another 6 months to a year. So at least I'm employed, but man, if these cuts keep up I'll need to find a second job. Has anyone else received pay cuts lately? Misery loves company. :-) Regards, Alvaro

Our working laws ("CLT") are very hard and unflexible and were created about 50 years ago, on an quickly raising economy. There are some controversial topics like: 13th salary, aditional money on vacations, "warranty fund" (compulsory savings which you only receive when you are fired), 40% fine over the warranty fund when you fire a person with no "fair reason", wage equality - if two persons on the same company have the same function, they have to earn the same money. Specially this last one is particularly harmful to programmers. This lead to "workarounds", like titling two different programmers as "Programmer 1" and "Programmer 2", as it's hard to prove on court that they have different skills. I see dumb people

            Brazilian work laws were highly "inspired" (copied) from French laws. Only that, in the copy proccess some stupidities were added. I see dumb people

              What do your think of your laws? Do you think they block the job market and create unemployement, or they protect in a efficient way workers against abuses ? Pro or Con ?

Unfortunately, I think both occur. They DO protect workers against abuses, and are very efficient in this. And they DO block the job market and create unemployement, and generate lower salaries, as the companies assume some risks for the workers and the government is hungrier on taxes. The net result? The protection is so high and so difficult to follow for companies that only 50% of the workers on Brazil have formal work. The other 50% are informal workers, without any protection. Worse: they are against the law. There are "workarounds" for the laws (e.g., opening an "one man company"), so you don't need to have these additional costs. On IT area, about 23% of the workers are formal workers. All the rest work informally. I've heard that even IBM hires some of their programmers this way. I see dumb people

                  Jeez. So where's the incentive for a company to pay you what you're actually worth, if they can't cut costs when times are bad? I'd rather take a paycut (to a limit of course) than get fired! Most Americans have this sentiment, I believe, from a recent NPR radio blurb. In fact, if done properly (ie, management also takes significant cuts), employees can feel like they are all helping to do something to ensure the company's survival, which affects everyone working their. That brings a question--do bosses fire themselves? Marc Help! I'm an AI running around in someone's f*cked up universe simulator.

                    Yeah, I have a long term relationship with a boatyard and the owner just asked if I could cut my rate in 1/2 for next 150 hours, and also only put in about 10-15 hours a week (also about 1/2 of the time I usually put in). I didn't have any major problem with that because I fortunately have other clients, but oh boy, if I didn't... Marc Help! I'm an AI running around in someone's f*cked up universe simulator.
