I know there's a few of you around. Has anyone tried using an ebow [^] or any other method to cause infinite sustain on a string? I used to play guitar until I lost most use of my left hand. Now I'd like to try it again as Ms. Wizardzz is picking it up herself. I wouldn't mind being able to build one of these, too. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Gizmo[^]

Oh John Martyn used the Gizmotron! Amazing stuff on an acoustic guitar!! John Martyn - I'd Rather be the Devil[^] I've seen Martin Simpson use the ebow with a slide on an acoustic guitar and it is very . I've always wanted to play around with an ebow!

Have you considered fretting with your right hand? (assuming you played right handed guitar) I tried using a friend’s EBow once, didn’t care for it. It was another something to hold in my hand or juggle while playing. I tend to alternate finger picking and using a pick while playing. For the infinite sustain type of sound with my Les Paul, I use a compressor and use a slight vibrato on the note. Used in conjunction with a flanger or chorus effect the vibrato can’t be heard. I am able to simulate bowed string sounds on par with a old style synth using volume swells. Good luck to the Ms. on learning to play guitar. It can be very satisfying.
It was broke, so I fixed it.

I do now have to fret with my right hand, but I lack the ability to pick or strum with my left hand. I wouldn't be switching from ebow to strumming, I would just keep the ebow on the guitar with my left hand, or buy multiples and attach them to the guitar. I know it would be a goofy, heavily adapted sound, but it would still be fun to play it again. I picked up a compressor pedal for my other instruments (odd, I know) but now I need to purchase a left handed guitar. I was looking into sustainer kits, but I'm not sure if it will allow me to do what I want. I am curious by the hurdy gurdy, but would need to play it upside down or find a left handed model which may be impossible.

We are a musical couple, but I'm still surprised how quickly she is learning it!

I'm going to pick one up tomorrow. The Ms. is out of town this weekend so I'll be in the basement working on music the whole weekend. I'll let you guys know how it goes. I like the sound Munaf Rayani gets here with it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czmgu74dbec[^] He tapes it on at 0:52, plays it with a slide at 1:52.

You could do this when the Ms. gets a little better. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CcsSPzr7ays[^]

Wouldn't you just turn the front side towards yourself so the handle is on the other side? ;P

Not used it myself but Bill Nelson made some good tracks with it.

I have an ebow. I've not sold it b/c I don't need money, but the truth is, most people who buy one, find it's interesting, but never actually use it to make music.

I can see that. I mean, unless it's used to solve a problem or get a sound you are looking for in particular out of a guitar, it can end up in your pile of lesser effects pedals / novelty sound devices. I think most of the sounds it can provide are replicated by synths these days. Have you ever shocked yourself with the thing?

I recommend using a compressor and a vibrato technique while playing. I'd be concerned that the EBow's electromagnet could eventually damage my pickups. /ravi

I had one of these[^] fitted a couple of years ago as a test to a throwaway guitar I had. It was a complete disaster - I'd recommend avoiding like the plague.

LOVE the eBow! LOVE LOVE LOVE the eBow!! Seriously, you can do some incredible stuff with it. The best use, and most common, is playing "backwards" solos (think Hendrix - Are You Experienced or The Beatles).

Do you have one? Have tried multiple ones?

Just the one, had it for years. My guitar playing partner has one too so we sometimes do some really cool stuff on dual solos.

Although very challenging technically, I wonder if you could pick up the touch playing technique, ala Stanley Jordan or Tony Levin on the Chapman Stick? Incredibly hard to master but amazing to listen to, and it's a completely different approach to playing. I would be able to play quite a bit with my right hand on the fretboard this way if I knew how to do it properly.

Wow, do you guys ever record that? Has to be pretty cool.

We do, actually, although no video yet, I should probably start doing that. I have a couple of rehearsals' worth of stuff to cut down and upload. We do a lot of Holdsworth/Dimeola type of stuff, pretty fun. As some other posts on this thread have alluded to (and you yourself), there's definitely a time and a place for gear like the eBow. Same thing for a lot of specialized effects, like harmonizers and ring modulators, both of which I also use. But if you're looking to stretch into some new areas, get some new sounds, this thing is pretty good for that. I don't use it much but love when I do :)
