Taskbar order (TFP*)

Ok so I revealed I have a favourite spoon awhile back, just one of my strange quirks. Here is another: I have a preferred order for applications on my taskbar, and will close and re-open apps to ensure the order is correct. Currently it goes (from left to right): Nelson Email Organiser, VS.NET, Internet Explorer, Fireworks, SQL Enterprise Manager and then anything else I use less frequently. (Windows Media Player gets minimized to the taskbar player control which always sits on the far right) I also have the taskbar set to groups so if there are two IEs open then it is one item on the taskbar. Do you also have a preffered order? Actually the reason for this post is I hope someone replies with "But Paul! Download XYZ Taskbar Orderer and then you can drag the items around to your hearts content!" or "But Paul! Just write a small app yourself which hooks into XYZ Windows API." That would be awesome. That reminded me of another great idea I had once, but I don't have the time or skill to implement it. When you've got lots of apps open for a long period, if you don't use one it's fairly normal for Windows to swap this task to disk, meaning when you click the task tray button it takes a while to un-swap the task before it can gain focus So how about changing the background colour of the task buttons so that they behave like a progress bar - you'd instantly be able to see which apps were swapped away, and when you clicked on one you'd see it load again, so you'd know that something was actually happening -- Help me! I'm turning into a grapefruit!

Where ever I have lived and which ever relatives are particularly close so that I visit often, I will have a favourite type of plate and cutlery to use and a favourite mug and glass. It's just the way it is. As for icons, Windows Explorer first, always, nothing else. Then Outlook, IE Homepage, IE Code Project then who cares. Cool! This is a nice organizational utility. However, you have to turn of "group similar taskbar buttons" for the sorter to work correctly. Actually, I think I like it turned off. Several times I've had the "hey, where did that app go???" reaction. Sort of like when I accidentally minimized the entire taskbar about 2 days after installing Windows 95. It took (I'm embarrassed to say) about an hour before I realized what had happened. Sure learned some keyboard shortcuts though (this was in the days before keyboards had the "windows" key)! Strangely enough ever since I started using Windows XP with the Watercolor skin I have kept the taskbar on show all the time. Before that I always had it on autohide. I wonder why? I am the former. A former co-worker was amazing to watch in SQL Enterprise Manager (he was a DBA.) He knew every keyboard shortcut and order number of each item. About the only time he used the mouse was to scroll to a certain line. The rest of the time it was a blur of shortcuts and keyboard hammering.

Especially when I have 10 IEs open. Absolute nightmare without the grouping on. That's the one selling point of Phoenix--tabbed windows. Other than that, I pretty much am annoyed at the Mozilla/Netscape differences. Therefore, I also keep one IE window open so I have "clickety" capability when posting a message on CP. Plus, Phoenix comes with a built in ad killer. Why else DO you have 10 IE windows open??? I find it very mysterious how, when I go to a website in Phoenix, it just happens yet when I do the same thing in IE, my disk drive goes nutso, the house lights dim, faint music can be heard from the heavens... (no, seriously, only the disk goes nuts. Why is that???) There's a CP article where someone did tabbed windows with IE--it looked pretty good--I bookmarked it, but don't use it because I really like the ad killer capability of Phoenix. Marc Help! Paul, It is not realy what you are after but, have you tried the Virtual Desktop Manager that comes with PowerToys? It gives you 4 virtual desktops to work with. It's a handy tool for keeping your work organized if you are like me and have lots of apps open at once. Fill me with your knowledge, your wisdom, your coffee.

You are one of those strange people who like IE to open a new URL in an existing window! I detest that (the "feature", not you lol) and start throwing things out the window when some app does it. Even with "Re-use IE windows" unchecked some apps don't listen. For a web developer when you are ten forms into a checkout procedure and an app overwrites that page with a new URL, it is damned annoying. Plus the taskbar grouping in Windows XP then stops new IE windows from getting un-ordered. Heaven :-D

Paul, It is not realy what you are after but, have you tried the Virtual Desktop Manager that comes with PowerToys? It gives you 4 virtual desktops to work with. It's a handy tool for keeping your work organized if you are like me and have lots of apps open at once. Fill me with your knowledge, your wisdom, your coffee.

I use ButtonBoogie[^] (a PC Magazine utility) You can rearrange the buttons using drag 'n drop. It can "try to" remember your preferred arrangement.

Everybody else seems to have realised that even computers can't put up with Windows for any length of time.
