Depends on what you think you are measuring. Personally, I think average milligrams-per-minute of cortisol produced in viewers who watched the movie at room temperature is the only valid metric.

Because tickets used to cost a whole lot less, so you can't compare "Harry Potter" with "Gone With The Wind" on the basis of raw earnings.

There is also people inflation, so you can't really compare raw ticket numbers either. Not to mention shifting economies (e.g., formerly third world countries that never had movie theaters but that now do).
