What could be the opposite for the word Catharsis?
-
A cartharsis is a release or cleansing. So its antonym could be: Costive? Constipation? Obstruction? Corruption? Take your pick.

What would be the 'best fit' antonym for the word Catharsis? Someone suggested "absorption" but is there anything better?

I was surprised there was no word like "anti-catharsis" in any dictionary.

Its not that surprising. It has a "technical" meaning, from ancient Greek literary theory: The feeling of releif (as DD says "[Emotional] Cleansing") normally achived at the end of a tragic play when everything corrects itself. A dramatic play with the opposite of catharsis would be an odd thing indeed. I took a look on Wikipeeia and Bethold Brecht wrote such a play: "The Measures Taken[^]". Arguably catharsis never happens in King Lear (or at least it is insufficent), this leaves the audience emotionally drained, it is also why it is one of my favourites.

Yes, but in common English, one has a catharsis, but not a constipation. Finding a suitable equivalent is indeed challenging. Blockage is the closest I can get now, but it is too materialistic in tone. Catharsis is a liberation and cleansing, so the opposite is not the lack of catharsis, but an orthogonally opposite concept. Sudden constraint 'of ideas'/'by thought', if only we can find one word for those four, seems quite descriptive of what I feel is the opposite of catharsis as we know it.

We had fun on twitter a few nights ago. The trend was to replace any one word in a well known title or quote, i.e. The Good the Bad, and the Duck, etc. That one is lame, but after a few thousand scrolled past there were many really funny ones. My short term memory fails me at this moment though.

imho John Simmons gave the best one-word candidate for an antonym for catharsis: "repression." 'Catharsis,' in modern usage, is broadly used to refer to an individual's expression, or release of feeling, in actions like crying, screaming, etc. In modern usage this 'release' is usually thought as something externally visible, manifested bodily by the person having a catharsis. In classic Greek theater, and philosophy (Aristotle), 'catharsis' had a more technical meaning: it was the cumulative effect of the agon (the drama) on the audience: as the agon moved through modes of comedy and tragedy, and the audience came to experience the drama as both within, and without, the psyche, by the process of projective identification, then catharsis ... accompanied by the emotions of fear and pity ... occurred. And, in Greek theater, this 'release' was both individual and collective. In modern psychology, and psychiatry, 'catharsis' can also refer to a 'movement within the psyche,' a qualitative change in sense of self, or awareness, resulting from 'insight,' from the release of energy from bringing repressed memories and feelings into awareness directly ... in this sense of the word, 'catharsis' does not necessarily have to be accompanied by a great 'show' of emotions ... externally. I like JS's choice of 'repression,' because it, to me, harks back to Freud's classic definition of 'defense mechanisms' ... 'repression' is one of the 'big five:' by the way, you do not have to accept Freud's controversial theories of infantile sexuality (Oedipus and Jocasta complexes, anal fixation, oral fixation, etc.) to accept his theory of defense mechanisms, and that theory is widely accepted in the social sciences, psychology, and psychiatry today, even by those who consider Freud a seriously compromised intellectual figure (for hiding what he knew about actual sexual abuse in his most famous cases, among other things). From a broader anthropological perspective, 'catharsis' can be collective, as well as individual, and the accompanying emotional-psychological release, in rituals, or rites of passage, is culturally shaped, defined. I will never forget being in the foothills of the Himalayas in 1975, on the October full moon, where I joined thousands of people from all over India on the ritual pilgrimage to the aspect of the Mother Goddess (Kali, Ma, Amma) known as Vaishnodevi (a young virgin warrior-woman who rides a tiger): a few miles up the trail, at the entrance to the shrine, I became one of perhaps fifty-thous
