Some of you may remember my Hell thread from Monday, where I described a rather messy, un-documented VB web app I'm working on. Well, one of the other guys was going through a file I had edited, and said "Wow! An island of order and sanity!" He was speaking of the way I formatted and commented my code. Made me smile. :)

John. When you are sitting there with a gun to the side of his head, he's going to say whatever you want him to say.

A former colleague of mine described his development team as "an island of excellence in a sea of mediocrity" at a meeting attended by all of the development teams! A short while after joining his team, I described it as "a gold plated turd"!

I haven't had to use the gun for coersion in a while because they just instinctively know it's there. Ready for use. :)

In my last job, one of the managers held up my code as good example. All I did was switch on "warning as errors" and remember to hit ctrl+shift+F before checking in.

Did you blush a little or just smile? :) Anyways, it is nice to be recognized for good work, no matter how small the recognition...it does matter.

Nice. I spent a good amount of time yesterday formatting, refactoring, and commenting an old coworker's code. Unfortunately, none of my closer coworkers like comments very much (the verdict is still out on one for how much he likes quality code). I actually got a comment from one coworker that the code was too commented (no, I don't write "allocating an integer and assigning a value of 5" comments). When reading through any code I've written, I can usually skip over reading the code and just read the comments; it's a great time saver.

Getting rid of VB(the gun) does not stop the programmer(the shooter) from choosing another weapon much worse. I've seen C code that could only be called an abomination! Bad VB programmers would then infect the C# world. Then heaven help us! I'll take poor VB code over poor C# code anytime. The language iteself doesnt enforce good coding practices although MS has tried to do just that.
