Text speak is the real scourge. As anyone who's spent some time in Q&A knows. Here’s an interesting article relating to text speak. http://www.theboltonnews.co.uk/news/districtnews/9146592.___Text_speak____teenagers_failing_in_the_jobs_market/[^] I’ve discussed this with one of our “talent recruiters” they have received cover letters and have seen applications where they use text speak. These are usually filed directly to the circular bin.

Some schools have their students typing on laptops before they have mastered their penmanship and writing skills. I am not surprised in the slightest about the whole text speak fiasco in the world today. Adults in general have encouraged this directly and indirectly.

Penmanship and writing are very low priority to me compared to proper grammar and vocabulary, regardless of the medium or technology used to express these important skills.

This is true now that we have computers. However, I still believe you need to walk before you can run. Grammar is no good if you don't know how to write.

My schooling managed to teach me almost none of that. Don't get me started on spelling. However, when I send out a resume or application I make sure to have it spell checked, grammar checked, and proofread by somebody. My posts here get no such treatment...

online games are the issue... Only half joking by the way, I played WoW for 5 years pretty hardcore, and you text speak pretty hard in that when in a raid. To keep your toon moving and doing its thing, you do not have time for full proper typing. It became so much of a habit(due to playing WAY to much) that I found myself text typing in word documents for school. I had to retrain myself to type at least half proper. I have since quit that stinking time sink of a game.

Programming is a race between programmers trying to build bigger and better idiot proof programs, and the universe trying to build bigger and better idiots, so far... the universe is winning. Be careful which toes you step on today, they might be connected to the foot that kicks your butt tomorrow. You can't scare me, I have children.

While less useful for our current every day work, there is some evidence that penmanship provides a useful form of brain development that typing doesn't provide. It uses more fine motor skills, is one handed and focuses your attention down to one particular point on a page.

I learned cursive. I print now...very well. However, my cursive now is unreadable (even my sig :) ). I constantly write in my profession and outside of work, aside from using the keyboard. I think that it is a crime not to know how to write in a manner that is intelligent, understandable, and informative. txt spk has its place as far as texting via the phone but anything else it should not be used...My opinion.

A half dozen years ago I had to give my younger brother a lesson on that stuff when he sent me a txtspk/tpyo ridden draft he was going to send to a local college prof to try and get assistance for a science fair project. That it's gotten worse since then I have no trouble believing.
